  • Hello Everyone- And Help Please

Hi, I was recommended to this site by a LFS employee. I'm in Corpus. I presently am being challenged by a 55 gallon with probably too many fish. I have:
    8 Yellow Labs 3"-4.5"
    3 Demasoni 1m 4" 2f 3"
2 Melanochromis Aratus 3.5" one appears to be morphing to male???
1 Pseudotropheus Crabro 4.5" appears male. Pretty much the boss of the tank.
    1 Shovelnosed catfish 4"
    1 Redfinned Shark- 5"
    1 Synodontis eupterus 5"
1 Duboisi 1.5" (If it is still alive)
Sorry if I messed up some names, I'm still learning them. The labs were a gift that started me down the long and winding cichlid road, which I wanted to do for a while anyway.

The crowding is due to the advise of a LFS. It doesn't seem to help, since about 1/2 of the Labs stay pretty beat up and there have been a fair amount of deaths/disappearing fish. Hence the odd mix. Most are survivors of the original small groups I purchased. They were supposed to stay confused and not beat each other up, but i guess they are smarter than that.

My main issue now is constant small particles in the water. It is not cloudy. I'm using a Cascade 700. Foam on the bottom, then charcoal then floss on top. Not my brand choice, it came with the tank. Pool sand substrate, not an excessive amount. Been in the tank for years. I do 50-70% water changes about every 5 to 10 days. City water, but I do have filtered water available. I use the city water for the ph. I have a pretty good pile of rocks that have proven to be stable. Had some that were a bit too soft, but they are gone now. Also using some rose pots for more shelter, allthough the Labs seem to ignore them. I feed either Cichlid Attack or Aquadine.

So I guess my question is "Does it seem that I'm stressing the poor mediocre filter too much with that fish load?" As I said I removed a pretty good amount of rock both because I think it was disolving and also because it took up a lot of water volume. That helped, but the issue is still there.

I don't know whether to get rid of a few of the Labs or what. I'm beginning to feel that the intentional overload was very bad advice.

      welcome to the box.

You got a number of problems really..

      1. Cascade 700 is severly undersized for that fish load.

      2. That 55 gallon is stuffed with fishes.

Can you get a bigger tank? can you get a bigger filter?

Welcome to the Box!! I also have an overcrowded and under filtered 55g. When I get particles in the water that my filter won't pick up, I use Crystal Clear. It's made by Aquarium products and available at Wal-Martor online at www.aq-products.com. I hope this helps

Depending on how much you have to spend to make it right here are my suggestions.

              1. I want a bigger tank. Buy a bigger tank and more filtration. I would recommend at least a 90g tank for this amount of fish. You will need to add another filter like a eheim 2217 to get the filtration you need or if you like the cascade filters a 1500. I would buy online and have them shipped to you as they are simply cheaper this way. A 90g tank will use the same width 4ft, but instead of 1ft deep its 1.5ft deep. I would look on craigslist for either a 75 or 90 or 105/110 4ft tank (the only difference between these are the height of the tank. With a craigslisting you are going to find usually you can get complete setups and then you can turn around and sell your 55g to someone else.

              2. I want to keep my current tank. Buy another filter, and look at removing some fish from your group.

Personally I am not a person who likes to mix fish from different lakes together because in 9 out of 10 cases they usually cannot handle each others aggression and someone will lose (die) from this.

              Like Jughead said.
I would remove the Aratus and the Crabro from the tank (unless you get a bigger tank)
I would remove the catfish as he is going to grow over time to a size the 55 will not really handle well (really needs a 6ft tank to thrive)
I would remove (if you can find him) the duboisi. He will not survive in that tank. He is mellow to anyone but his own species and will most likely not make it even when he gets bigger. He is a colony fish and needs others in there with his own kind to thrive. He does not do well alone.
The red fin shark is from South America and works well in planted tanks. Again a fish that is beautiful to look at but will not work well in your tank with the other fish.

If I was going to keep the most fish here are the list of the fish I would end up with (you will need a bigger tank if you want to keep the Aratus and Crabro). The yellow lab, Demasoni, Crabro, Aratus are from Lake Malawi and the Syno will do well in there. You can potentially in bigger tank add a few more of the fish you already have like a few more Demasoni, and you can add a trio of peacock cichlids, but as you are you are going to look at some murder to occur in there.

I hope this helps.. see what others say :)
              Keep smiling :)

Thanks for all the help and warm welcome

Thanks everyone. My suspicions are confirmed. Luckily, I found a 35gal cube tank and stand at a GS this morning. The HOB filter was bad, but for $20 who cares. Just happened to have a spare HOB anyway. So some residents will be moving. That should really help a lot. Then after that I can concentrate on finding a bigger tank at my leisure.

Thanks especially for the species advice.

                  I PM'd chiclid1409 as recommended.....

                        Thanks VERY much!

Thanks again for all the warm welcomes. My second tank is up and running, and all 8 of the yellow labs now live there. They, for some reason, seem to have been the issue. Since their removal, the rest of the folks are hanging out peacefully in the 55, as if they always had. And the labs seem to be at ease in the cube.

Cichlid1409 came over to visit and agrees with everyone that the Cascade 700 filter sucks bad for a 55. A Rena or Eheim is on my short list. Now I'm hoping to learn other tricks such as the in-line carbon for WCs, etc.

And of course, a bigger tank still wouldn't hurt!
