  • New to the area and the site

Some of you probably have seen me around other forums, specifically Cichlid-Forum and Cichlid Madness, both of which I currently serve as a Moderator ("a7oneal" on both, until I recently made the switch to "Tony" at CM for purposes of clarity). Those who are familiar with me, hopefully know me as a voice of reason and proponent of logic and civility, though I like a good curse word or inappropriate joke from time to time. I'll probably use this icon quite a bit. . .

I have over 20 years in this hobby, and have at least tried keeping many things, though with the advent of the Internet, obtaining good information is now easier than it was during half of my time as a fishkeeper. I'm always looking to learn about new species and techniques. I also keep blue-tongued skinks and have a cat. Apart from that, I am a theme park enthusiast, so moving far from Cedar Point and Six Flags Great America (which are both only a couple of hours away) is sad.

I have been keeping mostly Central and South American cichlids for the past couple of years, except when I dabbled in mbuna and shellies. I also have a fondness for Synodontis (specifically) and other catfish.

fshfrk is responsible for bringing me to the site. I am moving in a few short weeks from Kalamazoo, MI to the Houston area (still apartment shopping!), and he has been gracious in "pre-welcoming" me, to which I am immensely grateful.

I'm an open book. I like sharing my experiences and hearing about yours. I hope to be a productive member of this community, and I'm always happy to see something like this available to the local folks. If you have questions, feel free to ask!
Tell your boss you need to go home to take care of your "cichlids." It sounds an awful lot like "sick kids." )

Welcome to the Box! I hope to see you around here often, you sound like you have a lot to offer! I'm not sure what the in-person social experience was like in Michigan, but you'll find that a lot of us here get together fairly often to hang out. You'll have to join one of the events when you get settled.

I believe it was their first park! I'm going to have to check it out, because if they have anything like Raging Bull at SFGA, I'll be happy. That ride gives me shivers!

There are a couple of local clubs here, but I think many of those folks have been together for so long that some don't know how to welcome newbies properly, especially if you're not into mass breeding for points (since they would be looking for fry to pump their numbers). Some people were great, though. Informative, helpful. Others, not so much. I have stories. I've heard the club an hour away was better, but with meetings at night, and my 5 am start time for work, I just couldn't do it. Decent auctions, though! I have had better success with one-on-one dealings with other hobbyists, though, and great stores, including one in Lansing, MI that was truly phenomenal.

I'm totally into meeting and getting to know folks, too. I'm afraid of becoming too much of a hermit with few people around that I know, so social interaction will be welcome.

I don't have many tanks coming with me, and the majority of those that are (all but one) are 50-gallons and under, so I'll be envious of the space and species that some of you are keeping.

Scarecrow: I don't know... But some people without brains do an awful lot of talking... don't they?
Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

BOO to that! I've been to Cedar Point several times. Millenium Force is the best coaster I've ever been on. I had some videos of that one, Top Thrill Dragster, and Maverick, but my laptop went KAPUT this week, or I'd share them.
