  • new to the hobby

Lets see, I'm new to HFB as well as the fish keeping hobby (sorta). We had fish growing up but never to the extent I have read about here and other places. I've gotten into this due to a friend of mine and his dad who now keeps saltwater setups.

I currently have a small 10g in my office at work with some zebra danios. I am in the process of setting up another 10g at home for my daughter to start learning to keep. I also have a 30g that was given to me to start me out (I don't think that one will last long before I find bigger). I am reading more and more about the African cichlids, specifically the mbuna fish, and think this will be the setup I go with.

I look forward to learning lots while browsing the site.

On another note, there are some things I am looking for suggestions on where to get them, eco-complete african cichlid substrate and holey rock. Anyone know the best places around town to get them from or even online?

    Welcome to HFB.

I like yourself got back into having an aquarium after 22 yrs off.  I am enjoying this hobby of my youth.  I prefer South American Cichlids, but I have of late been taking an interest into Africans.  There are plenty of people online who will tell you how to get certain items, fish included, rocks and setup of aquariums.  I have learned personally a ton of great wisdom from this board. :)

      Welcome to the Box!

Fish Ranch, Fish Gallery both have Eco-complete
Inwood fish and 249 Tropical fish is probably gonna be the cheapest cleaned Holey rock at $1 lb.

You can order the eco-complete from drsfostersmith.com and it will probably be cheaper even after shipping.

Welcome to the Box!  I, like Zulaab  (wondering what that stand for  :? ) was absent from the addiction,  errr hobby,  for many years.  Not quite 22 years, but too long. When I started back I started with Africans which were totally new to me.  I have since began migrating back to my personal favorites of Angel Fish and Discus.   You'll find a lot of helpful members here, more than willing to share their experience and advice with you.  It's also a great place to become involved in local and not so local events, depending on where you live.

          Welcome to the box!

Sometimes you can find holey rock at local landscaping stores for just pennies a pound. They may not always as many holes as you want... but if you lok hard enough, you'll probably be able to find something.

Dorothy: Yes, I guess you're right.

Zulaab was a made up name for a cleric I played D&D with about 15 yrs ago.  For some reason or another it stuck with me.

                Howdy -
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Welcome from another new-ish member, me.  I don't think I've ever managed to be completely fish-free since high school, which was...well, many years ago.  :?   Happy spending and splashing.

Welcome! Look forward to hearing about your plans for the other tank(s)! And you've come to the right place - lots of people here know about Africans, and many even sell them, which can be very convenient!
