  • Hello from Santa Fe!

Hello everyone! I am completely new to the whole fish thing -- I ended up with a really neat pleco when I did a turtle rescue recently and am completely in love with the little guy! He was in a tank full of red-eared sliders -- I'm surprised he didn't become lunch! My only other fish experience has been with the childhood goldfish (my first one lived for 19 years!) and bettas. I've been in veterinary technology for 10 years, but there isn't much call for aquatic medicine in this part of the country.

Anyway, I'm excited about learning more about our aquatic friends and "meeting" new people in the process.

Welcome to the box! Glad you found the site. What type of pleco did you get? Any pics?

Hi! I have no clue what type he is! I can try to post a picture. He's wonderful, though! And addicted to the cholla wood I picked for him! Any advice on other things he might like? I have the little algae tablets for him and he feeds pretty well on those. My parents have a pond -- my husband and I were thinking about putting pieces of terra cotta pot in there and letting them grow algae then placing them in his tank. Is this a good idea?

Thank you! I'm excited about finding a fish forum based in Texas. My husband is considering jobs in Houston or Austin, so it's nice to know there are people to "play" with in the area.

Welcome!!! Its usually a good idea to have a readily available source of vegetable matter for any pleco and the terra cotta pot is a great idea. You can also blanch some zucchini and they love it. Some types feed from wood as well, but without a pic or description its hard to say.
