Hi, I just started getting more seriously interested in planted aquariums a few weeks ago.

I worked with fish some at my first job when I was 15-18 years old, but I mostly just knew species identification, compatibility, and the basic concepts of the biological cycle, and for salt water, the correct concentration of salt.

After some online research, I set up my first planted tank about 3 weeks ago. It's just a little 3 gallon, but I hope to have something bigger in the future. It has 2 yellow shrimp and 5 Emerald danios, but the danios are hiding in this pic.

looking good! i have been favoring the smaller tanks lately myself, although more in the 10-20 gallon range cubes. its more interesting to plant, you get a snapshot without being overwhelmed. scale is a little more of a challenge but yours is pretty good. watch that water lilly, they throw pads like crazy unless in very high light or constantly trimmed. one thing that i like to do, if it were me, is sprinkle some substrate around the base of the DW so that it looks like its growing out of rather than placed on top of the sand.

Pardon my ignorance, but I have no idea what you just suggested to me. Which one is the water lilly and DW? I don't know what you mean by "pads" either, I am completely new to this.

What I thought I had in this tank is anubias, a small patch of some type of grass, cryptocoryne lutea, sword, a tiny piece of wisteria, java moss, and red ludwigia.

Welcome to the box. that is an awesome looking tank. I would guess the anubia is what he thought was the water lily. It's not a water lily, the leaves in the picture make it look like one. Well it's not a water lily if it is really an anubia. And DONT trim it's leaves cause they are really slow growing. :)

Oh and do an update picture in a few weeks or a month. Can't wait to see how everything grows!

the plant in the back left corner looks like a green dwarf water lilly to me, hopefully its not synogomium which is an arrowhead houseplant. a closer pic could help. you have seen lilly pads on a pond right? the dwarf will grow smaller ones which float on the surface and look cool, but completely block off light to the rest of the plants.

the anubias might do okay there in the inert sand for a while, but they really like flow around their roots. they are an epiphyte like many orchids and bromeliads so they only really use their roots to anchor themselves. you could find a nice spot on your driftwood and tie them there with black thread if you wish. it will eventually take hold and the thread will disintegrate.
