  • My Texan friends keep calling me a Yankee.

Good Evening. I figure since I am new here I might as well make an introduction. My name is Jason and I am a recent transplant from Michigan. We moved our family here because of the better economy and weather. It's been 8 months now. I do miss the snow.

Anyways...On to the fish. Back in college my wife and I had a small 30g tank. Recently over a few beers we took the wayback time machine to remember the good days. No responsibilities, no bed times, and no kids. (I have a 3 year old and 2 yr old; They like to team up.) And we remembered our old fish tank. Fast forward a few weeks ago we decided it might be fun to have another aquarium. I started pricing out equipment new, and them came across a decent craigslist add. $150 for a 55g Tank, Stand, about 10 lbs of gravel, River rocks, two Aqua 30-60 filters, heater, vacuum, etc. We jumped on the deal.

It has been up and running for about two weeks as a FW tank. The tank cycled pretty quick as it was put back up as quickly as the previous owner took it down. Sitting at Ammonia is at 0, Nitrites 0, and Nitrates at 5. I got some feeders fish(comet goldfish) to give my children something to look at.

My wife and I tossed the idea around to get the equipment together to make a saltwater tank, however right now it isn't financially viable. I've done the research, and decided if I cannot do it right the first time, I wouldn't want to half-*** a saltwater setup.

So that opens up my current research quest. Cichlids. Its the path we are following down now. I look forward to bombarding the forums with my silly questions about the various breeds that have most likely been asked a few dozen dozen times. Thats all the time I have for now, Glad to be here.

    Howdy yank

P.s.: just said that while I finished reading. There's good and bad here in the HFB. Very addictive and will only serve to accelerate the descent into the abyss, aka hobby
