Re: Hey! I'm new - how are you?

Glad you're here! And it's great that you get to expand on your fishkeeping!

You've got a great start with the 2.5, it's good that you know the basics. I'll just put in my 2 cents here....have you done anything else yet? I would recommend filling up the tank with the gravel you won first. (check to see that it's level on the stand and everything) Make sure that it's the depth that you like. You might find out that you want a bit more gravel, but the 50 lbs will definately cover the botom of your tank.

Then I would fill it with water. If you still want to try out a few plants (if we didn't scare you!!), take a look at the post that was just put up with references to some of the great stores here in Houston. There are a lot of plants that will do wonderfully without much work at all. If so, just ask, I'm sure we'll tell you all about our own experiences. Anyways, if you get some plants, you might not want to fill it up all the way, just so you can have more of a handle of finding the right place in the tank for them.

So, with the tank filled, you can check for leaks. Then I'd say turn on the filter. And then it's all up to you!

The good thing about getting plants, is they can help push you along in the cycling, especially if they've been in the dealer's tanks for a while. Plus, you'll probably get a few snail hitchhikers, and that just adds more food for the bacteria :lick:

The problem with taking a sample of water to the fish store, or testing it within the first few days, is you're probably not going to get a reading on anything except pH, hardness, etc. In cycling you're looking first for ammonia, then nitrIte, then nitrAte, but like they said above, that might take a month or more.

I could definately keep rambling on, but I won't. Hope I didn't just add too much more to all the stuff running around in your head.

Let us know your progress, and keep the questions coming!

Re: Hey! I'm new - how are you?

Well everyone - I took the plunge! I did decide that I would wait on the live plants. I need to get comfy with the big tank first. Everything I had was soooo small in comparision to the size of the tank, so off to the fish stores to get some tall plants, and good places to hide. It took us about 2 hours to get everything rinsed, and fill up the tank. I got the pump going, put in the water conditioner, and added my filter from the small tank to help cycle it. By that time we were worn out. Man, that's a lot of water! So I left it going last night.

This morning I went ahead and checked the water - it actually looked better than the water in my little tank, so I transfered my little headlight tetra and the algea eater to the big tank. Now I think I will wait a couple days and see how that goes. My husband is all gung ho to get a bunch of fish, because he thinks the tetra will be lonely, but this little guy is very independent and he never cared for any of the other fish (except to chase them) so I think he'll be okay.

The water looks a bit murky - not too bad, but I will keep a close eye on it. Everything was well rinsed, so I don't know what else it could be.

I'm sure I will be hanging around here a bunch. I have many questions about what fish to get, and as time goes on, I'm sure I will have even more! Thanks for all your help and support!

Don't worry about the murkiness. It's probably from the gravel. It should settle out. If it doesn't in a couple of days, then you may have a different problem, but I doubt it.

Just remember, not too many fish too fast. That small amount of bacteria won't be able to keep up. Also, what type of algae eater did you put in there. Some can produce a lot of waste which is not what you want in your situation right now.

I can't remember the actual name of the algea eater, but he is just a little fella, about an inch long.

I thought it was the gravel, but just wanted to check.

I may go ahead a get a few little tetras over the weekend, but my husband is all about 20 fish! LOL!  I told him that was exactly what I was warned not to do!

Since you have a new setup you will need to buy algae discs for your algae eater
