  • Cichlid Addict in the house.

Hello everyone.   I have been keeping fish on & off for over 30 years. I just recently went cichlid crazy. It all started in August 2007. After having one tank with an Oscar (AL) for over 8 years, Al passed away . After his passing I waited about 2 months before deciding which fish I wanted to keep    . That's when the addiction started. First I purchased a few cichlids and put them in my 44 gallon. Then I started reading & oh my gosh they get how big! I decided I needed a bigger tank. Talked to my husband about getting a 100 gallon, of course he said no. Sooooooooo I got a 160 gallon instead. Now I need fish for my 44 gallon. Started reading more abuot puffer fish and decided I had to have them.   . I got the puffers of course...... 2 Green Spotted Puffers, joined the puffer forum and found out the 44 gallon would be way too small 8O. Now I had to butter up hubby for yet another tank. Found a great deal on the internet and purchsed a 125 gallon long for my puffers. Now I still needed something for my 44 Gallon soooooooooo I decided on German Blue Rams and Koi Angelfish. Well I did not get all the fish at the same time so I snuck in a 29 Gallon for quarantine.  :shhh:  Of course he noticed it rather quickly  :badsmiley:. Got my fish settled into the 44 gallon finally!!!! Now what can I put in the 29 Gallon.......Apistogramma cacatuoides. Boy I did not expect them to spawn every 30 days, out to get a 10 gallon for fry. Moved my fry to their new tank, having problems with water quality, too many fish for such a small tank. Oh no need something a little bigger...... out to get a 20 gallon.   Will the insanity ever stop! I promised hubby no more tanks. Then I went to the lfs and found some Dwarf Puffers. They are so cute and I do have an empty 10 gallon at home.    Maybe he won't notice if I put them on the desk next to the computer. Well he did.   I just said but baby I didn't buy another tank I just used an empty one.    By now it's christmas and I would love a bigger tank for my Dwarf Puffers but I did make a promise.   NO MORE TANKS But I also said I wouldn't "buy one", I never said I wouldn't accept one that someone else bought.   So I wrote a letter to Santa and bam! I got a brand new 28 gallon bowfront for my Dwarf Puffers. Now my 10 gallon is a snail tank. I recenlty told my hubby....Who needs a sofa anyway! Am I right? The joke around the house is that we have Aquariums instead of end tables so noone can put a bunch of junk on them. And they are much nicer to look at instead of some old lamp. This is my story and I am sticking to it.  :bsty:

BTW... I also have a 2.5 Gallon Betta tank and another 10 Gallon at my job!!! Yes the hubby knows about these too.

Nice to meet everyone and sorry for the long post. I guess you can tell I am a chatter.  :chatterbox:

.....i love your tale of how you got addicted .....we all have some kind of story i assure you...but i don't consider furniture a needed item in the home that much....give me a bean bag in the midst of the tanks and i'm good...who needs tv?....my fishies give me more variety than all those channels anyway.... ....i could be addicted to worse things ya know.....
but welcome to the box.....and from the sound of your plight....you'll definately fit right in....

I call the aquariums the Nature Channel. You know the channel the hubby can't surf on! And no commericals.
Always something intresting on those channels. And that's what I call HDTV!

It's an old and sad story...the most under-reported, insidious affliction our society has preying on it's members...MTS!
In spite of the dormancy of the affliction, and the absolute certainty of the syndrome reappearing years after the first outbreak, no treatment has been effective to date; with multiple support groups available (HLA, GHAC, HAS, FOTAS, etc.) it seems to continue it's ravages unabated.
With reinfection hotspots constantly apearing (HLA, GHAC, HAS, FOTAS, etc.), and dealers on every street corner there seems little likelyhood this condition will ever loosen it's grip on those afflicted.
MTS...MultipleTankSyndrome...can strike anyone anywhere; from 3 year old Angel fish addicts to 67 year old Tropheus fanatics, people are everywhere moving their furniture to make room for still another tank.
(edmlfc: If you have to move another tank to make room for your next 125, please contact me immediately...I still have some space left behind my last remaining couch!)
