    Re: Fish newbie LOL

i totally understand....if your buying the fish at petsmart or petco then look at the tags on the tanks....they will tell you if it's a community fish or aggressive or semi-aggressive....tetra's are schooling fish so you would want to buy them in a bundle of 6 or more.....they are very docile fishies and give no trouble.....guppies are also very docile....and they reproduce like rabbits....lol.....the feeder tank is the tank i would buy like 6 to 10 for a dollar and test the tank with.....these guys are very hearty and if they don't die then your most likely safe to put a couple of fish in there....

      Cope,

This is where looking at pictures and thinking about what you want to have in your tanks.
Personally I have always owned cichlids as I find them interesting and colorful.
When needing idea's I have always used this cheesy but interesting website http://www.ratemyfishtank.com/
This can give some pictures of tanks and at times will give you an idea about what you like to look at and want in your tanks

Take a look and look around come up with some ideas and we will be more than helpful.
If you looking to stock your tanks talk to us, many of us breed many different fish and they will 99.9999% be in better shape than what you are going to find at your local Petco/Petsmart, and usually cheaper too :)

      Keep smiling :)

        Cope,

Welcome to the box. My wife and I have a pretty good variety of fish and have mixed quite a few cichlids in some of our tanks so feel free to ask questions. If I were giving advice to a newbie, I would say this...

Decide what is important to you. For us it is color, personality and origin.

Color is the easiest. We like bright multicolored mostly. Origin is pretty easy as well. Personality is a little more difficult. We seem to be drawn to curious fish. Curious = fish that like to watch us as much as we like watching them, Pretty active and can become tame enough to hand feed.

Also keep in mind, you may end up having your first fish for a long time so choose wisely.

We have had combinations like this in a single tank but some of these could be a little expensive for a first time.

4ish Frontosa for color and they can get big (up to 10 inches) over the years
2 or 3 Parrots for the goldfish look and color but still a cichlid hybrid
3 or 4 Clown Loaches for color and cleaning (although these can be difficult to keep at first)
Lemon yellows for the bright yellow color

        Hope this helps.
