  • Crazy man on the loose

    Hey all,

So I moved to Houston about 4 yrs ago from Northern California, and no I am not a hippie :-p . I have loved fish keeping and going to aquariums all my life. I spent my younger years back home during the summer in Monterey going to the aquarium and learning as much as I could. I have also studied a lot about marine and freshwater life. So when I moved to Houston which is one of the largest cities in the country I was saddened to learn that we didn’t have a large world class aquarium. So since then I have been doing some sleuthing and I currently may have some finical backers interested in a project of this scale, but I wanted to see what the response to the local community would be.

Here are a few key points that would help push this project though.

    1. A world class educational aquarium would be beneficial to the marine biology field here in TX and we could partner up with local Texas Universities.
    2. It would add and attract more tourism to our city
    3. It would help drive business at our LFS as people would visit and want to have a piece of the aquarium in their homes.
    4. It could function like many other aquariums in the world where there are a large percent of volunteer’s vs staff keeping overhead low.

    Ect……

Anyways I personally think it would be a great addition to our city and the fish community as a whole. Please chime in with your thoughts.

Sea-arama marine world was here back when I was growing up. It was cool and there has been others. But I don't think they did well. The smaller ones we have now are linked to other business and that helps keep them open. Now I rarely have time for my own aquariums. As we try to get our beach house finished. After that I may start to have more time for that kinda thing.

Welcome to the box. I think you're onto something special here. If you need more funding, I suggest starting a GoFundMe account. I can share on the Houston Cichlid Club, which would give you extra exposure to over 600 people if it helps. Best of luck on this endeavor and I hope to see it pan out someday!

The funding I may have at my disposal is very high level, so I am not sure we would need a go fund me or kickstarter, but only time will tell. I think the hardest part of all of this would be to draft a business proposal and a timeline.

Glad to hear you have that at your disposal. I would have imagined the initial investment being the most difficult obstacle

Also if anyone is interested in helping trying to organize with this mad man endeavor PM me. I am trying to get some stuff drafted up this weekend so I can build a better presentation to potential backers.

What areas do you need help with?

One thing I think will help the project along is if we have the educational sector on our side. Since A&M has a marine biology department I think getting their support (not necessarily financial) and the support of other universities in the area that have Marine biology or ichthyology studies may help the cause. So if anyone has any ties that could get us in talks with department heads may help a lot.

Since I am not from around here I don't have as many contacts, and cold calling sometimes hurts your cause more than it helps.

Moganman went to A&M and studied aquatic sciences or something similar. Might reach out to him and see if he can assist in any way. Shoot me a PM once you know where you need more help. I don't have many connections fish-wise but I'm willing to help however I can

Yeah I am very passionate about this idea and I would love to get it off the ground and running. I think Houston and our surrounding area's deserve this and I think there are more benefits the Houston and the community as a whole, than negatives.

I would have to agree. I was just talking to a friend today about that. The aquarium trade is huge here, but we really don't have much to show for it (downtown aquarium doesn't count)

Well since the aquarium pyramid in Galveston seems to be what you are proposing you may contact them. You could also contact sea world in San Antonio. However I can see where the hardest part of this endeavor is like you stated, the business proposal and timeline.

Well what I am talking about goes way beyond both those facilities, if you have been to the Atlanta aquarium, Chicago, New York, or Monterrey Bay you will know what I mean. They are less amusement park and more teaching aquariums.
