I think some fish can be mixed with them but I've been told they do best in species only set ups.

agreed. most people keep them species only since they can get rather territorial. most community fish would get stressed too much.

Don't do community with these guys. They will get killed for their attitude. Sometimes they are not aware that they are the smallest cichlids in the tank.

some have success with them in planted tanks. i have seen some nice setups on youtube. they give ample non planted areas full of shells.

others will say they destroyed all their plants. i guess its hit or miss but worth a shot.

They need sandy open area with lots of shells. If you have a big enough tank maybe it would work. Another thing to consider is they require very hard water. That would limit your choice of plants because most plants require soft water. Maybe some hardy and low light plants would work (like anubias).

                              Hello everyone

I have some in a low tech tank, anubias and crypts. They do fine. They like the plants in there I find them sleeping in the Anubias roots quite often

Yes the tank I'm considering has anubias and I have java fern but the java fern species with the thin leafs. I'm not sure on the correct spcies name but this tank doesn't have sand at the moment, although I can add sand no problem. Its also a 55g. Still haven't decided yet but I really want to do a species only tank. I'm not sold completely on the shellies but they are an awesome species. Thanks for the feedback. Sorry for thread jacking lol
