most craigslist will sell d40 with it's basic lens (18-55). that lens is not that great because you will want the shutter speed to be more than 1/100 and with the low aperture on the basic lens, you will most definitely loose much quality by having to set a higher iso...

sorry, big terminolgy... basically, in my opinion, d40 just body (around $400) with nikon's 35mm f/1.8 (around $200 if not sold out).

since budget is an issue, some point and shoots have the a manual setting to set shutter speed. try to search for ones with that option...

**just saw that d60 link you put up -- it's a decent price in my opinion! VR lens makes it a littttle bit better.

I know nothing about the topic, but i find cnet.com to be a good site when it comes to researching electronics.

Find a few options and plug them into the search and see the ratings they give

I also suggest the Nikon DSLR cameras. (Canon DSLR are equally good.)

B&H has the D40 with a decent close lens (18 - 55 mm) for 475 with free shipping. I'm not affiliated with the company but have been pleased with their service before. (For comparison, eBay has one posted at 420 for a used kit.)

If this is beyond your price range, Digital Camera HQ has all sorts of breakdowns by price, quality and capabilities.

d40 and d60 DOES NOT take video! they are purely photography cameras. if you want video option also in a DSLR, you will have to get the d90. d90 will run you around $700 for just the body...

a quick run down -- d40 is nikon's main entry camera. d40x was supposed to replace it. they discontinued d40x after a year. d60 replaces d40x and is currently considered the entry level (though they still sell d40). picture quality is same! so if you were to choose between d40 and d60, go with the cheaper one. notice though -- they do not take video!

d80 was considered the best mid-pro camera for the longest time. d90 was then released, about a year back, and replaces it. this one was the first to have video capabilities!

also, make sure you watch out for online scams. to me, that price is way too cheap. make sure to check out resellerratings.com and search up the store and look for feedback. if the price looks too good to be true, it probably isn't true! goodluck!

I have a canon SD800is.... took most of the pictures I have posted on this site with it till I got the DSLR.

Still in good shape minus a slight little ding.
Comes with SD 2g card, spare battery, bag, whatever else I find w/box.

                            $250.
