Need some info on upgrading a chip..

Want to go from the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ 2.5 ghz to the AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core 6400+ Black Edition Socket AM2 Processor 3.20 GHz, 2MB L2 Cache

You think it's worth it?

I'm way behind on my CPU's these days, but I am just curious, what the cost of upgrade would be...?

replacing the chip is about 50 my cost

Without any specific info on the two chips in question, I'd have to say 50 bucks seems like an insignificant cost even just to "find out" ....???

I would imagine the speed differential between the two is worth at least that much.
As long as there is no need for a new mobo, why not give it a try, that's quite an increase in cpu speed, and the dual core is a plus too I would think.

You will see a small improvement especially if you do something graphics intensive. You are not going to see a major improvement in the graphics world until you go quad core, and then you will need to upgrade more than just the proc.

What video card you have in your computer ? Upgrading video card is usually the number 1 way of seeing a major improvement in your performance, because its what you look at that makes the biggest difference.

Black edition just means that you can over clock the processor, else there is no real difference between a regular 6400 and a black edition.

Video card nvidia geforce 7800 gt

since the processor is cheap I may get it with another 4 gb of memory.

I may upgrade to a 1gb video card

Delock -- honestly with a 7 series you are going to see a MAJOR speed increase with a video card upgrade. I am personally upgrading from a 5 series Nvidia card to the new Nvidia 260 GTX core 216 (896MB). You can spend the extra money for a 280 for the extra performance, but personally I am not made of gold so I am going to just get the 260. Do not get the 285/295 as the performance they add is not worth the money you spend more than a 260/280.

Unless you are running Vista 64bit, stick to no more than 4GB of ram as XP/Vista 32bit can only see the first 3.26GB of ram.

7 series video card? the 7800 gt or another one?

Nvidia geforce 7 series is all their cards from 7000-7950 (incl your 7800 GT)
When Nvidia ran out of number, they went to the new GTX series starting with their 200 series. I see them going into a 300 series within the year, as they are already at 295.

If you switch to Vista make sure that you get Vista 64bit or else you are not going to be able to see more than 4GB ram any ways. They fixed a large number of issues with their earlier version of their 64bit Vista. I am thinking the same thing, but right now as I said earlier, I am not made of gold so I am trying to do most things I am working on right now on the cheap :)

I'm agree with you, add more memory is waste of money if you don't have a 64bit OS, also the speed of the HD help a lot if you want a really fast machine (10000RPM HD).

If you like those graphics Delock.. see it all function on a faster video card :)
A fast hdd is important.
