    "African American"

Is this even PC anymore? I only hear this on the news or in print.

Did I just answer my own question? Guess so since common language is colloquial and print/broadcast tries to be PC.

Anyway, I'm curious how others perceive this title. If this applies to you, do you like it? When I fill out forms and they ask my ethnicity I sometimes put "white", sometimes "latin" and sometimes "other".

Why? Because my father is Greek but my mother is Spanish/Irish. That makes me a white ethnic with latin tendencies. What the hell? What friggin box am I suppossed to check? Are they really interested in my ethnicity or my skin color because I can pass as "White" but also qualify for "Hispanic".

I think I'm going to go apply for some loans at the Hispanics Only office and watch their faces frown up when they judge me by my skin.

What a mess. I've always been curious about these labels since that don't really fit me well and I'm curious what others "ethnics" have to say about them.

Imagine your delima if you were a decendant of White South Africans!

Ive run into the same thing. I'm White. My mothers side of the family migrated from Sicily in the '20's. Because of that, when I joined the military, I was put into the "of Latin descent" catagory to get in. There were no openings for "White" at the time.

It all confuses my wife, who is from Russia. She's never thought of herself as "White" just "Russian" So, on forms which ask for race, she checks "Asian" because of her original geographical location. She was born and raised in Siberia - which is considered to be northern Asia, and looks just like every other white person.

It's a flawed and out dated concept if you ask me. Dont ask me what the solution should be...no idea!

I believe they are saying "black" now. I'ma whitey but I can drag up some non-european descent. I've got a great grandmother who is american-indian, you don't hear a whole lot of civil-rights from them cause they are either dead or rich casino owners.

My father was full blooded cherokee indian from the Oklahoma nations, my mother was 3/4 cherokee indian, her father was full blooded as well.
being 3/4 cherokee indian....i take somewhat offence to the speculation that we're either "dead or rich casino owners"....you should be very careful making statements about things you don't know alot about. The Cherokee Nation works very hard to maintain it's heritage and culture. If you look back into history our people were forced off the land and put into "reservations". Being forced into "isolation" we've had to preserve life as we "choose" to live it. The chiefs have worked very hard to keep the "born" right of being an "Indian" in tact. The hardest working chief happened to be a woman as well.
Wilma P. Mankiller 1985 – 1995 Born in Stilwell, Mankiller is recognized for developing rural areas and providing services for Cherokee citizens. During her term, the Cherokee Nation grew from 55,000 to 156,000 tribal citizens. Through her work, she earned world-wide recognition for the Cherokee people.

So, please read up on the things you comment about before you do so.
                    thanks......

Wow that's so cool! I have some Cherokee in me but everyone I've met only has a teensy bit. I have some on both sides of my family but on my father's mother's side I am the great great great grand-daughter of a Grey Eagle Little (1806-1907). He added the Little as his last name after he married an English(?) woman. And their son was named Redman Little. I also have alot of German, Czech, and some Scottish. But this is all from a long time ago. Many of my ancestors came across the pond early on.

I've never put down anything but Caucasian but I think they should do away with the labels, because it doesn't really work for most people.

(On a side note: I had a customer at work think I was Slovakian. I said, "uh, no, I'm a Texan." I must have been talking funny at the time.)

Imagine me filling out the box. I am 1/2 white (Irish, British, German, and a little French for good measure), 1/4 Japanese, and 1/4 Black. And I am married to a Mexican so my kids will be every color of the rainbow except Middle Eastern.

something worth noting... I highly doubt anyone here is Caucasian. A true Caucasian comes from the Caucasus region of Georgia (not USA!). In the 1800's certain peoples were labeled as Caucasian, not for skin color, but by cranial measurements. The models for these measurements were Georgians from the Caucasus region.

Guess I'll have to start checking off "other" :P
