To prevent the introduction and establishment of nonnative wildlife species that negatively impact the economy, environment, or other animal species' or human health, and for other purposes.

Gary Frazer of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service said it would not take away pets that people currently own. He also said the bill probably would exempt nearly every animal now sold or traded.

How can you tell when he's lying? His lips are moving!

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Thank you for contacting me regarding the Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act (H.R. 669). I appreciate the benefit of your comments on this issue.

As you may know, H.R. 699 was introduced in the House of Representatives on January 26, 2009. This legislation would direct the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to evaluate the risk of a nonnative species before approving it for importation—a measure aimed at curtailing the invasion of local ecosystems by foreign species with no natural predators and preventing damage to the economy and human safety.

I understand the importance of protecting our environment and population against the incursion of invasive species; however, I am concerned that this legislation may not provide the flexibility required for Texas’ legitimate wild and exotic animal enterprises such as the pet industry, zoos, game ranches, and wildlife conservation activities. Historically, state laws and local ordinances have been established to regulate pet and wildlife ownership, and I believe that governance over this matter should be reserved for state and local entities. Although similar legislation has not been introduced in the Senate, you may be certain that I will keep your thoughts in mind should the Senate consider relevant legislation during the 111th Congress.

I appreciate having the opportunity to represent the interests of Texans in the United States Senate. Thank you for taking the time to contact me.

                    Sincerely,

                    JOHN CORNYN

It's still sitting in committee. It'll probably die there.
