  • Question about my hose

i went to Lowes today and decided to make my own python and i found everything i needed but then i heard a rumor that is freakin me out.
I bought a 50ft water hose and i was told that they are lined with some chemical that will kill my fish. I already filled up my SA tank and everybody is fine, Now i'm halfway done with my Frontosa tank. Should i be freakin out?

Ever get a drink from a water hose?

I used one for years to do my tanks before pythons were invented. If it's safe for potable water it should be ok for fish.

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? You pilot always into an unknown future; facts are your only clue.

I would watch them close. Probably ok.

Do you still have any of the tags or labels for it? They sometimes will post a warning if it is treated for any kind of anti-bacterial agent or not safe for aquatic use etc..

You just mainly need to run water through it if it sits up for awhile...especially in the sun. The heat can make the vinyl leech out into the water over time. I don't know of any fish store that hasn't used a garden hose as a fill hose.

+1 not sure if it is an unban legend or not but the rumor is that the heat from the Texas Summer sun will cause the cheap hoses to give off gas that could be bad for your fish so the fix is to run water through the hose till it comes out cold.

He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

I used the vinyl hose in the water section.

I heard the rumors too and it makes sense.

I use the same hose to drain the tank as I do to refill it, so I figure if there's anythihng in there from sitting that's no good, it gets rinsed away as the old tank water is passing through. I try to get all the water out as I roll it up for storage, but I know there's always a little still in there. I've never had any problems with it though, and I've always used garden hoses.

I also just use a regular garden hose in my pond from the pump to the bog filter. the only problem I have is that the fittings are getting rusty, but it doesn't seem to bother anything.
