I've never sold on Aquabid (only bought once) but I'm assuming it's like eBay in that they make commission and fees on each auction so they have a vested interest and an obligation to as a service provider to make sure certain standards are followed.  I would think it would be important to Aquabid to remain reputable or people will not use them if there is too much dishonesty going on.

Believe it or not, eBay does make an attempt.  I know someone (through a relative) who was bidding up his own auctions on eBay using other computers.  They actually caught him by using IP addresses, bidding habits and bidding locations, etc.  Even though he denied it eBay banned him for a year.  And, yes, you can try to get a new ID without their knowledge but they do use techniques to try and catch that as well (he tried too and got caught but no additional punishment was levied other than deleting the new account.)  Unfortunately, eBay is on a different level than Aquabid or any other auction sites in terms of volume so there is no way they could ever catch everyone.

      from the AB feedback section

*Contributions are not required. It is 100% volunteer. A 3% contribution request will only come up for items that sell for more that $30.00.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Interesting.  Well, that blows my theory out the door. I always assumed they charged a commission.  Oh well, they still don't want a bad reputation so it does serve them to police the auctions somewhat.  But if they aren't directly making income from them then I guess their obligation is somewhat less.  I guess it's up to the buyer to just be aware of how things work.

The HLA is thinking about putting an auction on our new website to be announced soon. We could use some help testing the software and trying to find some rules to keep us out of trouble. If anyone with a passion for fairness and honesty wants to help please let us know.

lots of websites give free service to the regular Joe or Jane and then charge per-click to advertisement  (links and banners that we all click-on) AB is no different they make money ever time you click on a link that is not the AB website (I’m sure there are exceptions and I do not want to hear them)
