  • Science fair..

Does anyone have any fish related ideas to share that could potentially be turned into a science fair topic? I'm doing to for highschool, and am in no rush. I have done fish/invert related projects the last two years, and I really enjoy them.

Any little idea can be helpful! I can always expand on a topic :)

    Thanks in advance!

"way to introduce co2 for planted tank"

" photosynthesis" using riccia to show how plants takes in co2 to produce oxygen- With this project you will able to see the oxgen bubble.

A nano planted tank with diy co2 setup? Good little project. Just some idea.

I couldn't think of anything at first so I started Google-ing for you. I saw that someone tried to test the memory of a couple of Goldfish. That would be neat to do. You could use a different species of fish even.

If you had the time you could one on genetics. I don't know how to go about it though.

What projects did you do in the past?

If you just wanted to a research-based one, you could do one on the affects of the fishing industry on the environment. Probably been done already, though. But you could try to find a solution where we can still eat fish but we rotate the fishing on different species so no one species gets too over fished. Or something...

Or this one: How farm-raising salmon is affected the wild ones. Basically there is this nasty parasite (?) out there that is associated with most salmon farms and the parasite is killing the wild ones. You could also try to find a solution to the problem.

Thanks Tnguyen for the suggestion! I'll look more into it!

Thanks as well to FuzzyDragon09. Actually, two years ago, I worked with goldfish and memory. I tought them to reconize three colors in positive and negative affect, allowing them to complete a color maze correctly. It truly was a fun project. Last year, I tested different solutions to repel barnacles from the hulls of boats, and found several less hazardous ways of doing so, compared to the current paint (Which is leaching lead into the water in some cases) This as well was a nice project.

        I appreciate the suggestions!

I also did some research on the lionfish invasion, and how they are taking over parts of the coral reefs. I think it would be amazing to do a project on this, perhaps create a more affective catching method (Since right now they only net them and relocate etc) but I'm not sure what type of better means could be used..I'm still looking into that one..

Edit: Also would be interested in doming a project on sharks and magnetism. (They have a sensory gland in their nose, and magnets repel them, same for stingrays) I would love to test this repel, but I'm not sure where to gain access on stingrays or sharks. I wonder if any other animal has that same sensory gland?

The salmon one sounds interesting, I'll do some research..

Do you have pictures or results from this? It sounds fun.

Lead paint to repel barnacles! Where do they come up with these ideas?

How about selective breeding/genetics with easy to breed fish like guppies? I'm not an expert but I know there are a few here on the Box!
                    215g Malawi Peacocks and Mbuna
180g Tropheus Ikola and Bemba and Clown Loaches
58g Bristlenose breeding and grow out

Testing different kinds of food on how hit affects fish color? You could see if the products marketed to enhance the colors of fish really make a visible effect. Get two small tanks, put some Boraras in each, feed one tank foods with the special 'color' foods and feed the other tank with foods missing the key ingredient. Take pictures throughout. In the end, compare the two sets of fish to see if there is any discernible difference in their colors.
