  • Air conditioner went out! Who can I call to fix it tonight?

Our air conditioner has gone out! It's gone from 80 to 81° in the house in just the last few minutes. I have classes booked the entire day tomorrow, and the company I usually call to work on our a/c already has two other calls to do tonight.

Who can I call to get it fixed tonight? Please help!
    Vicki

Sorry, I could probably help with a diagnostic if you could provide more information.

        1) cool air at all?

        2) Compressor outside running?

        3) clicking noise from fans inside?.

All I know is that I felt the house was hot so I checked the thermostat temp and it showed 80°. I turned it to off and then back to cool, let it run for a few minutes, and then it jumped to 81°.

I haven't gone outside to see if there's anything to check, what do I look for? Otherwise, we have air moving inside the house, but it's not cold air.

            Noise inside is normal.

            Going outside to listen. BRB.

Okay, the a/c thing outside isn't moving at all. There is a medium pitch hum that sounds like a motor running. Not very loud, but audible.

See if the condenser fan outside is moving, the big things on top.
The compressor should hum as well if running, if not we can try to push start it.

Gotti, meant to answer your question. The thermostat is set at 75°, but the house is at 81°. This is not normal.

I hear the hum, but the big fan is not moving.

                      Well good.
More than likely a capacitor is spent.
This involves pulling off the outside cover.

The other simple thing to check is the breaker outside, if you have one, it may be tripped.

Ice on copper tubing? I'll check for that, too.
