Sorry, I was on the phone and didn't want to put the guy on hold. He actually called back to say he'll come out! So we'll see if he can/will fix it. If not, it's great that your uncle can help. That gives me two chances that I might get it fixed tonight. I'm crossing my fingers!

Bad news. The compressor shorted out.

I didn't think the breaker switch was off, but it was. When the guy turned it back on, it made an awful noise. So, of course, he turned it right back off.

Then he checked the a/c itself. The wires are fine, but he said something about the "compressor is shorting to ground". He said it can happen from a power surge. He took it apart (wasn't as hard as I expected), and used a voltage meter to confirm things. I wouldn't know one reading from the next so I can't say if what he did was right, but this one company has always been honest with us in the past so I believed him. The meter would show numbers at first and then drop quickly to a 1 or 01 or something like that.

Anyway, he can fix it tomorrow while I'm gone since it's all done on the outside. So I just have to get through tonight and the morning and then I hope to have cool air again.

Thank you to everyone for being so helpful! I'm sorry I goofed when I looked at the breaker switch, but your help was still very much appreciated!

If you need a second quote or opinion let me know. I just had 2 brand new complete units installed in my house and the guy that I used is awesome. I saved so much money.

Thanks, i_am_poor, for the offer. It turned out to be the compressor, as the guy said. The old compressor was under warrantee so we only had to pay for labor and freon capture and refill (which wasn't cheap!).

I thought I might put a quick plug for the company we use because they have treated us well over the years. The company is Abco Air & Appliance in Missouri City.
