This plant was suspected in my dog's death a little over 2 years ago. We never did find out what definitively caused it, even the guys at A&M after her necropsy couldn't say for certain. But please, please be careful. It's such a common plant these days, and not many people are aware of the danger it poses. Thanks.

Here is my puppy. I miss her. :(

The sago palm is behind her in this picture. :( She was a great dog.

Sorry to hear Mzungu. If we lost our dogs I dunno what we'd do. Great looking dog BTW.

Do you know of any other "common" plants/trees that could harm dogs if ingested?

              Thanks, Peter.

The only other plant I know of that's really harmful is poinsettias. But I'm sure there's a list out there. We (my family and I) were all unaware of sago palms and their danger, though. We hadn't seen them on any list. Ironically, when we took her to the emergency vet, there was a flier on the bulletin board about sago palms and how dangerous they are, and that not many people are aware of the danger they pose to pets. :(

I recently just found this out from MB too. I was shocked!

But it can happen. So move them palms out!

Yes, it's true all Asian people do that.

NICK will be here shortly to confirm.

Here's a list. Sorry to hijack this happy thread! :( Just thought it would be a good place to get everyone's attention.

Our handy list contains plants that have been reported as having systemic effects on animals and/or intense effects on the gastrointestinal tract.

Keep posting pics, everyone! I love all the puppies posted so far, too cute!

Thanks, MJ. :) But, like I told you then, be sure that when you move them out, your dog is safely out of the vicinity and the area is COMPLETELY cleared of any remains of the plant. We think that's what happened - my dad was "rescaping" (to use aquarium terms) the backyard, and he didn't really like the sago palm, and decided to take it out. Though my dog was never one to eat foreign objects (she was one weird lab, lol) we assume she ate a seed or remnant of the palm. Within hours...well, it's a very sad story, but we had to put her down less than 72 hours later.

Poinsettias will cause a pet to be sick to its stomach, but usually will not kill an animal. However, Sago palms are indeed lethal. I have seen various fatalities at my work due to Sago Palms.

Here's our newest addition: His name's Zeus, and we got him from Houston Labrador Retriever Rescue. The whole neighborhood came over in a welcoming party when he first visited with the people from HLRR! They all wanted to meet him. He's been with my parents for a little over a year now.

POLAR OPPOSITE of Sally, the one I posted about. He's the biggest baby I've ever seen, and he truly thinks he's a lap dog. He's about 85-90 pounds, and loves to just plop up and sit on your lap. He's also very clumsy...but he's getting better as he grows up. We got him when he was about 18 months old, or at least that's what the HLLR people and my family have hypothesized. :)

Since we touched on poisonous doggie plants... here's a list of people foods that are poisonous to dogs.

View the list of poisonous foods to avoid, including: chocolate, xylitol, alcohol, avocado, coffee, caffeine, citrus, coconut, coconut oil, grapes, raisin, macadamia nuts, milk and dairy.
