A few mornings ago I was walking the sidewalk between house and garage with the dog. ( I must walk first thing before my brain wakes up and thinks of other things to do). I felt a big stick under my worn out (thin) walking shoe. Not unusual , I step on sticks in the yard every day, but usually they crack, this one didn't, it felt "tough". I then realized the dog (chiahuahua) has not run ahead of me to the gate but is several feet behind me . So I turned to see the copperhead snake try to hide under the plants at the walk edge.
I lifted the dog past the snake and we went on our 45 minute walk. When we returned I had to encourage the snake along the walk then under the deck. He seemed to be moving OK ; I was afraid I hurt him.
Conclusions ; 1-stepping on a copperhead isn't all that bad. 2- one should keep the flowers trimmed back along a walk. 3- Chiahuahuas are smart enough not to be the first to pass a snake.
