My first thought when I saw this thread was, "Oh, dear. I wonder how long it will take for someone to tell her to shoot and eat them..." :(
You guys exceeded my expectations, thanks! It didn't happen until hours after the first post."Millennium hand and shrimp!"

True, sadly enough the little buck looks like it may be a spike, or at least have one slick horn...which means, someone will shoot it most likely. I know we would out here, just not good genetics for getting better mass on the rack. I am sorry to tell you such news, but it is the truthBEWARE Guard GUPPIES On Duty!

Thats not bad news LMRC, that is just good management practice. They are called scrub bucks for a reason.120g - Tropheus Moorii Kambwimba

Its just like the little "baskethead 4/6/8's" that are not wide enough, but are old enough to where they should be shot, or "managed" to better the population. But are not legal shooters. We have 8 feeders we keep filled year round, to help ensure the deer have plenty to eat regardless of the habitate encroachment. We also plant foodplots with clover/chickory and oats/rye for them to browse. We keep them fenced off, so our cattle can't bother them either...which gives them plenty of room to eat. There are a bunch of people that only feed during hunting season, or when they can afford it....My opinion...if your going to commit to something...DO IT...don't half-a$$ it! We use some of the money from our cattle sales to feed the deer...its only fair, the deer were there first and we put cattle on the land, so you must have a responsibility to the wildlife you impact...good livestock management, and land management...if more people would think about what they were doing, it would be a better place. At least we don't "cage" them, in high fence pastures that aren't big enough like some do. I relize they can "breed" some very nice deer, but the deer still do not have the space to roam as they would in the wild. Some big bucks will travel MILES for a doe...where the highfence..can only go as far as the fence goes.
P.S. Sorry or the RANT....but it is the only way I could explain deer management.Last edited by lilmissruffcountry; 10-21-2009, 09:50 AM.BEWARE Guard GUPPIES On Duty!

Nice photos. I notice you have a whole yard full of deer browse/forbe; as they will eat anything except St Augustine and oleander. I don't yet have proof that they will eat hoentensis (very aromatic bog plant).
I think your situation is that they will not jump a fence if they cannot see the otherside ; so with your solid fence, they won't come in except through the gate.
They will get/are acclimated to humans. When I walk the subdivision with the dog (on leash) , they won't move until we are about 10 ft away.

LMRC - I pretty much have no idea what you're talking about. Could you explain why at that certain age a deer should be at least a 6-point? (I think that refers to the antlers, right?) What is a "basket 4/6/8?"
Like I said, I don't really know anything about deer. Thanks. :)"Millennium hand and shrimp!"
