Delock -- main thing is you need to get something that feel comfortable in your hand.

I would go with a 9mm. Why High Cap will give you somewhere around 15 shots. No need to carry a spare mag. When I carry mine, I am coming with 18 bullets.. If I have not finished the fight off in 18 rounds there is something drastically wrong and I should not have been there in the first place.

I would check out the following guns.

        Springfield XD 9mm
        Glock 19
        Sig Sauer 226, 229
HK USP 9mm or USP Compact 9mm.

Goto Collectors Firearms on Richmond and Fondren, check out as many guns as they have and make sure it feels good in your hands. Write down what you like. DO NOT BUY there.. They are over priced.. they just have a huge selection of guns and this is where you get a chance to look at what you like.

The main thing for you with as big as a paw you have, you cannot get something that is to small because it will not fit your hands and you are not going to be able to shoot it accurately. Importance on accuracy as there is no need to waste bullets on something you are not going to hit.

Your frame is large enough that you can conceal a full size without a problem.

            40 isnt a bad caliber.
Problem with 40 is that they are harder to find.. maybe soon they will be back in larger numbers, but 9 and 45 seems to me to be the only calibers I am able to find in greater numbers.

Guns to look at are basically the same.
Sig Sauer 226/229 (full size/Compact size)
            HK USP 40/40
            Springfield XD 40
            Glock
Smith & Wesson M&P 40 (forgot this one above)

Again make sure that it fits in your hands. I have shot guns that are ultra easy to conceal and after one shot I am like I really dont want to shoot this thing again. In a fight / flight situation you cannot have doubt about the weapon you are about to defend your life or someone elses life with.

If need to be I can stop by one of these days and bring my Sig Sauer 226 and 220 with me. This will give you at least a feel for either one and see if this is something you like.

I have a witness 40 and a glock 40. I got both at pruitts guns and ammo, and they were a good deal. It really depends on you, +1 on getting something that feels comfortable.

I've had the compact xd-40 for 6-7 years. If you get that then know you will need to replace the stock springs in the mag which is rather hard to fine.

Dont get me wrong. 1911 is a nice gun and I would love to carry that.
Problem : You are basically forced to carry an extra mag. I only want to carry the gun, I am not looking to carry reinforcements into battle. This is why I suggest a high-cap weapon with either 40 or 45 in it. This way you can carry 15-18 bullets with you to the fire fight, and it better be over with before you run out.
Friend of mine taught me a long time ago. 9 vs 45.. the better shooter always wins.. he who trains the most wins.. caliber almost does not count as those who miss, miss with either one. 9mm gives me the opportunity to bring back on target way earlier than those who carry 45.. just my 2.3c worth.

+1. I think 9mm will stop most people coming at you anyhow. If one bullet don't then two or three will. Got to hit what you aimming at. But delock is a big dude and he can handle a .45 cal. The longer barrel guns will help with accuracy as well. But nothing is going to over come the fact that a 9mm mag holds more bullets.

+1 on the M&P line. They are a very high rated line of pistols.

Go to gundirectory.com and read the reviews.

The M&P line comes with three replaceable grip backstraps including a large one.

I have a compact 9C and it's a very solid pistol. 300 rounds down range and no FTF's or jams. My next purchase will probably be the full size .45
