I'm looking into offsetting the energy I use through the addition of solar panels. Anyone have any experience in using solar panels at home?

I've been thinking about getting a small DIY panel kit myself...I'll be checking back now and then for other comments....

Solar energy is still too expensive in my opinion, even with the incentives, tax breaks and reduced price of PV due to recession. I have been monitoring the situation for the last two years. On average you can recover the cost after 10+years (best case scenario) assuming high increase of electrical energy cost.

How about a bit of solar panel heat to keep the tanks at ideal temp? It would require hard plumbing, but for a fish room it seems that it may work???

I've looked at this often over the years...not practical.

Tim, the current technology available on the market is only about 25% efficient (max) and is very cumbersome and fragile. There is new technology that has been used by the military and is going to be available to the public (planned this year) that is around 45% efficiency rated and is much less expensive and easier to install making it less expensive to install as well. After a LOT of research Traci and I have decided to wait for the thin film technology to mature a little.

I have a buddy who's been in the Solar biz for about 20 years. He lives in Austin and will be doing ours with me when we do it. Maybe we could get a deal on a group buy :)

I was reading the paper the other day and there was a artical that Solar panels are going to drop within the next couple of years because of newer techology and the thin film techology
