Rhett, you make me laugh. You sound just like my friends and I when Metallica made the "One" video and it played on MTV. We were all like those fawkers sold out, that's FN bs. Until that video Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, Testament, and others like them never got air play on radio or MTV. That video changed them, it changed it for me and my friends.

I'll never forget watching MTV unplugged one night in the barracks, and it was Alice in Chains. It was their first concert in like 2 years or more, and the bassist wrote on his bass... "Friends don't let Friends get haircuts" I laughed my *** off, because he did it on purpose and Metallica was in the studio audience. It was right after the Black albumn and Metallica had all cut their hair short, looking like everyone else.

The music for me then was all anti-establishment, it was me. And what I learned over the years, is that "does the man make the music, or does the music make the man?" Music is always changing, music comes from you.

So wether your Chuck Billy, George Fisher, or Tom Araya and singing hardcore/thrash/death Metal in your 40's or your James Hetfield and your music styles changed as your life changed, it does not matter.

Just play... or enjoy what music does for you and how it touches your life...and answers the question for you... "Does the man make the music, or does the music make the man?"

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Prior to this thread Lady Ga Ga was a name to me...so I decided to google some videos to see what I was missing. I listened to some videos and some acoustic songs and she is uber talented. Great voice and amazing pianist. I'd love to hear her do some blues songs.

        Heh
50 yrs old and listening to Lady Ga Ga...who'd a thunk it?

What are the facts? Again and again and again--what are the facts? Shun wishful thinking, ignore devine revelation, forget what "the stars foretell", avoid opinion, care not what the neighbors think, never mind the unguessable "verdict of history"--what are the facts, and to how many decimal places? I am so sick of hearing this out of uneducated people. Do you KNOW her? Have you seen her naked? Are you a doctor? I cant stand when people make judgements, especially about something like this, when they dont have all the facts. If you wikipedia her name and educate yourself, you'd know that she was born a female. Her legal, born name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta. She is an openly bi sexual FEMALE. This kind of debate takes away from her genius and it makes me sick. Besides, lets say that she is endowed with both male and female parts, does that negate the fact that she's (as Mark stated) "uber talented"? No. I'll bet you dont think any differently of Rob Halford of Judas Preist and he's about as gay as they come, but he's one of the best frontmen of all time.
This just helps prove my point about commercialized music. I'll tell you this, I'm a metalhead, in every shape and form. Heavy metal music helps define WHO I am. In the metal community, we dont have debates about sexuality, race, gender, political views, etc. We dont care what you wear on stage. We dont care what you do in your spare time. We care about the MUSIC. We care about the emotion that heavy metal music invokes in us. We go to shows, and most of us dont even watch the show...we are too busy beating the he11 out of each other. I think if bands would get back to the roots of MUSIC, the stuff we hear on the radio today would be drastically different. I always hear these radio musicians talking about "my influences are Robert Plant and Tony Iommi and Randy Rhodes and Jimmy Page" but apparently we were listening to different versions of these people because what I learned from them was that music came from the soul. It wasn't some over produced, outsourced pile of crap. It was blood, sweat and tears that these guys put out every night. It was passion. It was REAL. Thats what extreme metal is getting back to. We've weeded out most of the crap that invaded metal music during the 90's and now its good again. Growing up I listened to alot of Heart, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, AC/DC, Bon Jovi and Aerosmith. I loved that music. When I got into Junior High, music started changing and becoming very "pop". Thank the gods for Kurt Cobain and "Smells Like Teen Spirit". That tune literally changed my life. The day I heard that opening riff, made me want to play guitar and forever sent me on a path to expand my musical knowledge. The 90's sucked for me because nothing else inspired me the way that Nirvana did. Then I found heavy metal in the opening intro to "Fade To Black" from Metallica. From that day on, I have searched everywhere for bigger, louder and heavier music. Death metal is the only thing that calms me down, pumps me up or makes me want to disembowel someone...all in one song. LOL. I've been on a rant now for too long....the bottom line (for me) is that music is weak and watered down right now but I think things will turn around soon. I think that enough people are tired of what's going on in the industry right now and change is on its way....(that is in no way, shape or form a reference to, or about, Barack Obama.)

oh....and Lady Gaga is NOT a dude....and even if she was...i'd still do her. LOL.

What makes you think im uneducated? Better check you schooling before you say stuff like that. I bet I have more letters after my name then you do. And soon I'll have some before it.

Who gives a sh*t who she sleeps with. She is an extremely talented musician and singer. From the little I've seen she goes her own way and is her own person. In a world of musical mediocrity, she's an undeniable standout. Someone compared her to early Bowie...I don't find that parallel unreasonable.

When my kids were in their teens I went to concerts with them and saw some very talented musicians...mostly grunge and metal bands. I was not often made to feel welcome as I didn't fit into any of the molds that the kids at these shows expected. It made me want to turn the clock back 20 years or so for them, when my hair was down the middle of my back and MY parents called me a hippie. Funny how no matter how much changes, so much stays the same.

For the record, I was not insulting your intelligence or schooling. I was merely saying that you are uneducated about her sexual orientation. And no offense, but as a musician (i've been actively playing guitar for over 10 years) I feel like I have a lot more education than most people on discussions about music. Afterall, music is my life. Its not just something I listen to while I drive or while i'm at work. I study and write it on a daily basis.

Has anyone listened to any of the bands I listed earlier in this thread? Any feed back?

i listen to rock. alot of rock some country in the past two months due to the wifey, but all rock except most 80's and scream rock. i can sum both of them up in two words: they suck!
                            my favs are
                            CCR
                            metalica
chris cornell when in a band
                            STP
                            zeppelin
                            godsmack
                            foo fighters
drowning pool (even with the new singer they are still good)
                            DMB
                            cage the elephant
                            authority zero
                            green day

there is just so much more, my ipod is packed with over 2k songs. so to tell you how i base a band for being good or not is how they are live.

All three of these bands use "screaming" vocals. If need be I can make a list of the songs that incorporate these vocals...

I know that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but please be educated on the subject before you start blasting the music that I love.
