Dell netbook

My sister in law brought over her Dell netbook because it may have a virus, when it boots up and you try and log into Windows XP it automatically logs you right back out. It does not have a cd or dvd rom so I was trying to make a flash drive bootable to try and run an anti-virus program to see if that helps. I am not having any luck. Suggestions would be appreaciated.

is the windows activated?

sometimes theres a problem with the windows activation cd key which even though you activated it, it still kicks you back out.

you would have to boot into safe mode and then edit the registry and disable some admin stuff...

It wont let me boot in safe mode

I believe it is because they have owned a while now.
