  • who has large tanks on the second floor?

I live in second floor apartment and Im thinking to upgrade from a 5" 110g to 5" 160g. just want to see how many people in here have a large tank on the 2nd floor. Any advice on where should i put the tank? how do i know the floor is supported enough for a large tank like 160g? I can not ask the office manager since they don't accept me have fish tank due to water usage( i pay head count on water bill).
I have seen Newb's tanks on the second floor. who else has experiences on this prob?
    Any suggestion would help. Thanks.

I am with you Tony I live upstairs as well and just got the courage to upgrade from a 90 to a 5ft 120. I live in fear of coming home each day to find my tank in my downstairs neighbor's living room.

      I think it's a non issue.

if it's concrete under the carpet you'll be okay. most buildings built in the last 30 years or so shoyuld be okay. I used to have a 6" 120 upstairs. the only problem was getting it up there.

I think by and large your right but floors do have maximum load ratings

if the floor has a concrete slab then you will be fine. just try and balance the weight of the apartment...dont put 1 ton on one side of the room with hardly anything else on the other. In my situation...I had a 7ft 210gallon on one side and a 6ft 135 on the opposite side. I think this helped even the floor.

I live on the second floor in my apartment complex , too. I have a 135..... a 110.....2 x 75........a 55. Going on fours years and no problems. I read that the best place to put a tank is on a load bearing wall. If you live in a fairly new complex... then I think you'll be ok .

Plus, if the floor gives out is that really your liability?

It should be the builders fault for nothing making good floors.

he would be liable... but it doesn't matter because it will hold the weight no problem. used to have 2 75s side by side in my old apt...

Yeah, I think people worry to much. These floors can hold some weight man.

I understand if you got a 10' tank that's like 600g but a normal 4 or 6 footer is going to be fine.

well, to test if here's what you do. tape off a section of the floor where you want the tank. find about 6 people who weigh about 250lbs each. put them in said taped off area. if it works, you are ok, lol

I know which complex you live in, Tony. You should be fine. I'd put it perpendicular to the beams and against a load bearing wall for more of a peace of mind though.

Would you rather the floor give out with people on it or a fish tank?

Just to make certain, the base of the stand is flat and goes around the circumference of the stand, correct?

Meaning that it looks like this:
