  • My son is going to college in Kentucky

Jim has been accepted to Berea College in Kentucky and I'm having mixed feelings. I know it's an excellent opportunity for him, but I always thought he'd go to school here where I could at least see him once in awhile.

Any other parents here that have sent their kids out of state?

Beer, Partying, and Women...the three essentials to an excellent college experience. Sounds like he will have a great time!!! I say let him go and hope the lessons you taught him will stick to him while your not around.

Well, that's the one good thing. It's a private Christian college. He has to live on campus and is not allowed to have a car the first year and the town is a dry town

That only leads to driving / catching a ride to the nearest liquor store usually just over the next county line. It also leads to stock piling liquor and possibly an entrepreneurial experience. College students will always find a way to get what they want or desire. It all depends on what newb said about the lessons you taught him will stick. I say let him go! Just remind Jim that you are there for him if he needs anything, anything at all. sunrise Oh, congratulations!

Sorry to hear that. Please advise him to go else where for the reasons already mentioned.

                Who, me??

                )

But really, college years for me were great in that I was able to explore something away from my "comfort zone," if you will...but no matter how crazy I got, I still called my parents every week, and learned to appreciate them so much more than I already did. It's a good learning experience, and although it's understandably stressful for the parents, I know of TONS of families whose relationships grew stronger once their kids realized how much they really appreciated their families.

I stayed in town for undergrad and graduate work due to my mother's health.

If I had kids and they wanted to go out of town I would encourage it.

                  Two rules:

                  1) stay out of jail

                  2) get the degree

                    myjohnson,

I would also encourage the offspring to go to college out of town!

                    thekarens,

I would also advise Jim about the bootlegging laws of the Kentucky county that he lives in. There are laws on how much alcohol can be transported across or into a dry county for personal consumption. Also advise Jim about obeying traffic laws and state laws while transporting. How can 7 cases (24 cans to a case) of beer and a case of 1/2 gallon Wild Turkey 101 be considered for personal use when asked by the judge? Yes it was concealed in the trunk.

for some, that chance to get out and see a different part of the world only occurs when they join the armed forces, you go to school.

I would encourage it if you can afford it, and no matter what happens, I always knew who my parents were and what they mean.

I actually moved to Maine (from Michigan) to attend school (post-grad). I was 22 at the time. I still saw my parents and my brother several times a year. My brother and I always had one of those weird, competitive sibling relationships, until I moved back (I think it was partly maturity, partly realization that we actually did like each other). Since, he's been my best friend (and the one having the hardest time with my impending move to Texas). My parents did not want me to move an hour and a half away for my undergrad degree, but it was the best four years of my life (and I am not a partier or drinker)!

If your son enjoys it, it will be the best experience he could ask for. If he hates it, he can come back and finish school close by. I'm an advocate of living somewhere else for a little while, at least. It's really a win-win for him.

I agree with Tony, if they hate it they will be back...

I have some friends who have never gone back, so if anything be proud that they are going and keep them going. It is wayyy harder to restart after you've been away than to just take a break with a class or two a semester. Just keep them going...
