Working at the Galveston Poison Control Center today. Had this hilarious conversation a few moments ago:
"Poison center."
"Hi, yes, I am the school administrator at -- and I'm calling to report that one of our students chewed on and killed our class pet."
"I'm sorry what?"
"He chewed on a gecko. We have retrieved as many gecko limbs and organs as possible from his mouth."
"Did the gecko make it?"
"No ma'am."
"What a way to go."
In all seriousness, we're seeing a lot of weird kids trying to eat live fish and reptiles. Must be the heat gettin' to them... or they're just weird... or pissed to be back in the classroom. Please be careful with your kids because Salmonella isn't dangerous in and of itself, but other water pathogens can mimic Salmonella and can be a lot more serious if unrecognized or left untreated. And yes, a lot of these pathogens ride along with our fish and exist in our tanks at home!
Hope everyone's stayin' cool somehow.
