What do you mean 3 gallons? is it a tank with built in overflows or is it a Hang on Back overflow?
You are better off under powering the overflows vs. overpowering. Over powering will just add more heat to the tank, use up more electricity, possible problems with flooding etc.

Yes its built in and the 3 gallons is the size of the full overflow box
For a 110g if reef ready with built in overflows I think a Mag12 would be the highest you should go and even with that you would probably have to T it off and dump back into the sump or ball valve it and lower the return flow. With a HOB I would go a little less just to be on the safe side.
Look into the Mag9.5 and run large return lines and you should be more than well off.
