  • What to do in America?

My family will be visiting again in January, this time they want to go "for a drive" around America. We probably will stay within Utah and Illinois, Texas and Nebraska. Any ideas or suggestions? Places to go and things to see.

Anybody own an RV and want to lease it for a week or two in Jan?

    Chris,

Granted this was during the summer I did this, but from Houston, many years ago we drove from Houston west to LA (now I would prolly avoid LA) then north to Las Vegas, then back east through Colorado and back to Texas via Amarillo.
Places visited in New Mexico - Carlsbad Caverns
Places visited in Arizona - Phoenix, and the desert around the area Petrified Forest.   Grand Canyon, and a couple of other places I cannot remember.
In California - LA and Disney World (by now WAY to expensive of a place to go in my mind)
    In Nevada - Las Vegas
Colorado - the mountain ranges (skip this in winter because of all the snow)
In Texas - San Antonio - Amarillo - Dallas...

I would have to look at a map for a January drive.. the snow line going north will be somewhere in Kansas.   It can be as far south as Dallas but not permanent.

Those places in January are going to be pretty rough driving and not so good weather.

Why would you want to leave Houston in January, its about the only month its bearable and nice to do outside fun things in Housotn.

Its not me, its my parents. In Wales its cold and snowing in January, so driving isnt a problem.

What would you recommend in Houston?

I know theres the Battleship Houston and Independence tower. Nasa space centre and Houston Museum of Natural science.

Better take a bag of quarters if were going to Chicago. That has to be the most amount of toll roads in the US?

Really?! I actually didn't know that. I was just up there in August, but most of my family is up there, so maybe they just know the ways around the tolls.

Your guide to the best of Illinois. Places to go, things to do, the best places to eat and drink, must-see Chicago, trip ideas and inspiration for your Illinois vacation.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

This is a bit off-topic for what to do in January, but I wanted to post a little Hello! from Sante Fe, NM, where I can't tell you how thrilled I am every single minute of the day about the LACK of HUMIDITY ! Ahhh! this is what I paid for ! Friend of mine from Chicago and I landed in Denver last Sunday (sorry to miss that HLA meet!) and are working our way south to Albuquerque for the big balloon lift off fest next weekend.   I'd love to see some of the snowy states in winter, but I just don't feel I have the travel know-how to get around in them, bred and born on the Gulfcoast that I am. I'm still waiting for someone to come up with an affordable transporter beam.
Hey,B, would your parents like a couple of summer boarders in Wales?

didnt mean to rag on illinois- the land of lincoln so harshly. yeah, i know chicago is there, nice city. ive just drove from mich. to ok. so many times and the way the highway takes you is just barron, im sure if id gotten off the beaten path there would of been something to see. im just more into the nature thing i guess, like rushmore, grand canyon, giant redwoods, ect.

I know you weren't ragging on Illinois.

Just pointing out 'urban' sights in case the family doesn't like too much nature stuff.  :)
