  • Sink plumbing question

there is a double sink in the upstairs bathroom that has always had issues draining properly, but recently it started backing up(water coming up from drain). So I took apart the J pipe and noticed that all the piping was filled with a clear gel substance. I think this was from draino that didn't clear the pipes over the year, but that didn't explain the sinks draining issues since its always had a problem. While I was down there I noticed there is a rubber hose coming out of the wall connecting to both J pipes. When I disconnected the hose I noticed that both of them were filled with all kinds of debris. The hose was also dripping water, which leads me to believe this is the water that is backing up into my sink and with the J pipe clogged up the water had to go somewhere. Anyway, does anyone have an idea of what this hose is for?

        Sink plumbing question

I don't know if this is related, but we have a similar issue with our upstairs bathroom sinks. The AC overflow drains into the sink plumbing there. Maybe that's what it is?

Given that the AC units are basically right above this bathroom i would bet those are drain lines for the units.

LOL, I had the same idea. Great call L&M!!!

The hoses might need to be cleared as you might be going through a secondary drain line. A can of compressed ait might do it

From an AC tech you would some serious issues if you drain pans had enough water in them to cause a sink to back up keep in mind that it is only condensation

Then I would guess that is not the issue. One of my good buddies is a very reputable AC guy and he has been in my attic to look at my unit in the past 3 months. Everything was tip top.

my question is whats on the other side of the wall from your bathroom and the blockage is probably down in the pipe somewhere you can go to like home depot or lowes and get a small auger and that should fix it but depending on how old those pipe are your gonna want to be extremely careful so that you dont crack or burst the pipe

                    Sink plumbing question

Lol. True. Ours gets clogged with hair and whatever and then causes the AC drain to back up. If we forget to periodically use drano and clean out the drain pipes, we end up with water from the AC drain pan dripping down the bathroom walls.

Our bathroom sink gets clogged with hair as well. We just take a plunger to it.

I have to clean out the AC drain rubber line at least once sometimes twice a year from algae and stuff in it. Our sink drain that the AC is hooked up to is draining slowly now, and I need to pull it all apart and clean the pipes in the wall. I've already cleaned the trap so I know it is not that. And this is a sink we rarely use.

                        Good luck on cleaning it.
