  • satellite or cable?

Do any of you guys have satellite or cable?  I would like to know what you guys think of it overtall as in price, service, and picture quality.  Im planning to sign up with satellite or cable this week.  I had cable like several years back and it was great, but never tried dish network or direct tv.

I have satellite and must say that one thing that is really frustrating is during really bad storms we lose reception and there is basically nothing they can do about it.  Other than that, I love the packages offered with some sat. companies.  I have the sports package with direct TV and that includes a lot of fishing and hunting channels which is very important to me.

Here are some pro's and con's

Con's (things I can think of)
Cable TV (More expensive).  If you get Roadrunner the cost of internet will be less than DSL + DirectTV
Some say service sucks but I dont deal with them often enough to be a problem

Pro's (some of the good things I can think of)
I have HDTV - If you live for recording TV to watch later..  well cable is the way you want to go.
NO ONE and let me say this again NO ONE besides cable has DUAL HD tuners in their recording device.  It would anger me to NO END if I would be forced to record on HD recording and the second one in LOW def because this is the only option you are going to get with DirectTV or any other satellite provider.
I run one Scientific Atlantic 8300HD device with a external Sata 500G drive and I have more than ample recording time on my recorder.

Internet right now is giving me about 8Mbits and I am quite happy with it.

I got Dish Network because they had the most HD channels at the time and their HD DVR was the cheapest too. The bad storm thing is annoying but you can kick back and watch recorded shows while it's happening. And they're real lenient about paying your bills on time. I got Comcast cable internet and they charge $30 for being a couple days late and they won't stop calling me to get me to switch even though I turned them down numerous times.

              Re: satellite or cable?

I've had satellite for many years, and I couldn't stand to have cable.
I was a cable tech for both Cox in New Orleans and Time Warner here in Houston, as well as a DTV installer.
I always have perfect picture on every channel, unlike cable which only has digital channels from Ch 100 and above.
If having 2 tuners in your DVR is what you need to be happy, cable is your Huckleberry.
But except for those with HD, satellite is crystal clear sharp digital quality on every channel all the time, while every regular channel with cable from 2-99 is regular analog, different clarity on each individual channel.
The rain fade with satellite should be very short and rare if installed correctly; I rarely have any and it is quite short in duration, with local channels still on when the national channels are pixalated briefly.
Whenever I had to do a line repair or change a tap on the line for cable, everyone from there down was out 'til I finished my repair. Satellite is self contained, from the dish on your roof to the tv, no outside maintanence dependency.
I spent a lot of time after Katrina replacing cable drops in Louisiana, and everyone with cable service was without tv (and internet) for a very long time; everyone with satellite was watching tv as soon as they had access to any power source, from a generator to the inverter plugged into the cigarette lighter on any motor vehicle.
I can take my satellite box anywhere with a dish and watch tv, travelling or at a friends house.
I have the sports packages, and can travel to anybody's house for a gathering or stay at home to watch.
Can't move an inch with cable. (I have spare dishes.)
Lots of sat customers have weekend fishing camps and travel with their recievers; never without tv!
You will love your satellite TV; while I prefer DTV, Dish is the same quality picture on every channel.
The HD service is outstanding, as well.
My relatives have had HD as long as it's been out, and every tv in their house is DTV HD.

I don't DTV and Dish would like it very much if they knew people were taking their sat. tv with them where ever they go.  I'm sure they would want money for all the different locations...but what they don't know won't hurt?

                    Re: satellite or cable?

No, as long as you have the set activated and pay the $5 a month per xtra box, they don't have a thing to say. You own the equipment, and many folks take their boxes in their RVs. What they hate, but can't do anything about, is when Jr goes off to school with a box from home.
Outa state would require no phone line (never hooked one up to my box ever) and local channels would need an antenna or minimum cable service.
Lots of folks began to share accounts when the smart cards were no longer programmable by "hobbiests" which means with a dish at each house 2 or 3 people could share the cost of everything and have a box in each home...about $30 a month for total programming. No PPV access though, that requires a phone line (phone line = snitch).
You can still get Free to Air sets and get Dish programming for "free". No smart card means no theft of services, it's legal to have a Free to Air setup.
