Saw similar situation on TV interview of a Wake Island survivor (That was a Pacific battle early in WW2, USA lost that battle to Japan).
For psyc consuling ,the survivor of 3+yr in Japanese POW camp got a cup of coffee, a donut, and a chat with the red cross girl at the coffee bar. I can't type fast enough to put in the modern reaction.

Re: Humor : School 1967 vs. School 2007

Schools are completely business now.  It is to the point that it makes me wonder why we even have public schools sometimes.  My wife teaches high school and some of the things i hear are completely absord.

For Example, with the new No Child Left Behind laws there is no classes for people that are slow.  There is regulars, and there are special ed.  The only people that are in special ed are kids that can not really function on their own.  My wife has anywhere from 5-15 special needs kids in each of here classes because there are no basic's classes.

One of her special needs student recently started talking about commiting suicide.  To help the child, they decide to pull them out of one class a day for consuling, which is a great idea.  Unfortunately this child reads at a 4rth grade level and the class they pulled them from each day for a 9 days was......drum roll......thats right, reading class.  Why you ask.  Because reading class is the ones class that is not on the taks test so its the most expendable.

Makes me want to throw up.

              OK, I feel better now.

LOL! You have to be able to READ to take the TAKS test!!! Holy cow...talk about redundant!!

My mom teaches 4th grade at a public school in Baytown, and basically all she can teach is the TAKS test material... All year they pretty much prepare for the TAKS test... It's kind of sad that kids can still fail that thing! I guess we are dumbing down our kids. I went to private school for all of my elementary years, and that was probably the best thing that my parents could have done for me. I was so ahead of my classmates when I transferred to public schools in 6th grade that they almost let me skip a grade. Those teachers weren't threatened with their jobs to make sure the kids passed a test!

No Child Left Behind does have some purks, but there are 2 major flaws with it.  First, in an attempt to bring up the education of the least intelligent students they have held back the smarter ones.  Second, the drop out rate has sky rocketed and will probably continue to go up for the reason I stated above.  The person i was talking about was depressed because they went from special ed classes to regulars.  And even though they literally study 2-4hours every single day with there mom, they still made 30's or lower on every single test.  Once kids like that turn 16 they end up just giving up and dropping out.

Quick Question Does the law apply to Junior High? Because we could use classes for students who need extra help. ANd loopy you are right schools are focusing on TAKS too much. A kid can make a A for the entire year but if the fail the Taks test and you stayback. And the TAKs is really stressing I have to take it    for almost every subject this year!!
