You don't know what Chanukah is, you don't know what Lansmen means, or you don't know what L'Chaim means?
      Or all of the above?

          Thank you!
I lit my tiny Menorah (one candle for the first night!), and called her in New Orleans. I described her first night's presents to her, and when she gets here Thursday she can dig in the three piles; she'll go home with a stuffed suitcase!
Her mom isn't Jewish, so she also cleans up at Christmas! What a life...

              Lol...
I was raised united Methodist.  I was a presbyterian pianist for 14 years.  In the meantime I volunteered at the local jewish temple and at the local catholic school (taught music theory and handbell classes), was baptised baptist, and christened church of christ, confirmed in the UMC, and played in a Lutheran orchestra for special services.    Lol at one point I figured i had all my bases covered.  THEN... I moved to Houston and discovered the BIG city.  Now I find my peace in fish and other smaller living beings.  Anyway... I would like to wish everyone a very warm and wonderful Holiday Season.  Peace to you all, and may you enjoy the reason for YOUR season.

Chanukah: Jewish Holiday, celebrating a Holy Miracle in the Holy Temple thousands of years ago, where we light a candle each night for eight nights. Also kids get gold coin chocolates, spin dreidels (tops) for prizes, and get gifts. Serious loot for the kids. Occurs at different times each year, usually around the first to the middle of December. Calculated using the Hebrew Calander, 25th day in the month of Kislev, 5768; this year that translated to Tuesday December 4th, at sundown.

Lansmen is Yiddish for "fellow Jew"; and L'Chaim is a toast, means "To Life!". Loosely translated, "A good Life to all!"

See also: Adam Sandler's animated movie,"Eight Crazy Nights".

i've seen that movie, but that was when it was in the theatre.

Not to turn this into a religous study thread, but what exactly is the "Holy Miracle in the Holy Temple".

Re: A Holiday Wish for my Lansmen!

ND...check the link I posted...short and clear history lesson.
Basically, after Alexander the Great beat everybody's butt, the Syrians were Hellenes like everyone else in the area.
When the bad Syrian king took over, he started killing those that didn't do as he said; and when he placed Greek idols in the Holy Temple of the Jews, made Judaism illegal on pain of death and sacrificed pigs on the Holy Alter in the Temple...some serious Jews, Mordecai Macabee and his sons (Judah Macabee was his general) tore them a new one, although seriously out-numbered. Of course, there were more than just the Macabee family involved.
After taking back the Holy Temple, they found the Eternal Flame was about outa oil to keep it going; only one day of fuel left the Hellenes hadn't desecrated. More was sent for, but it would take 8 days to get more holy oil there. (See it coming?)
The oil, however, burned for 8 days, and more was brought in time. The Ner Tamid (Eternal Flame) is never supposed to go out, so we celebrate the Miracle of the Temple (not the military victory) every year. Chanukah, Festval of the Lights.

Re: A Holiday Wish for my Lansmen!

Sounds like it would be a terriffic movie. Some of my favorite movies are of Biblical events, like Ben Hur and The Ten Commandments.

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

I agree, CF. I am a bit of a movie freek, and Ben Hur is still up there with Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of OZ for greatest movies ever made by humans!
Thanks, ND...I always crack up when I hear him do that song, sorta inside humor as it were. Jews have always been of the philosophy that if your enemy is laughing too hard to hurt you, that's a good thing!

We have always had lots of enemies and lots of funny Jews, probably why there are so many of us left after 6000 years.
