  • Trouble installing PC game

I am attempting to install Age of Empires 3 onto my laptop, but am having trouble with the last disc.  During install of the first 2 discs everything goes smooth, but when I put the 3rd disc in the PC does not read that anything is in the drive.  This is not the first time it has happened, but i am not sure what causes it.

I checked to make sure the disc was not messed up by running it in my wifes pc and it was good.

    Any suggestions?

have you tried cleaning the cd or dvd reader with a cleaner?

Hey, this may sound silly, but have you tried both sides of cd too?   :)

my cleaner is at my work so I may try that on Wednesday.

if it was a dirty drive, then i would think there would be issues with all three discs or different discs at random.

These particular cd's have pictures on one side, so there is only one side to them.

Well, they only thing I do remember from my old IT Training is, that data on a cd is designed to be read from the inside out. Meaning the first bit or byte if you will is placed down closest to the center, you may want to examine the disc and see if the area surrounding the circle has any sign of dust or gum/gunk on it. It probably does not sence it works in the desktop.

Can you burn a copy of it on the pc that can read it?

my wifes pc will not burn in dvd format, but my fathers might be able to do it.  I will try tomorrow at his house.

                Re: Trouble installing PC game

I assume there isn't an error code or message, it just won't recognize the disk?

Do you have any software on the laptop that acts as a 'virtual cd drive'?  You don't have to answer  :) , but if you have software on the machine that allows for copying of copyright protected DVDs or CDs, sometimes that affects the install of a game.  I've seen this happen on 'a friend's' computer.  Unfortunately, 'my friend' didn't figure out how to get around it and ended up using an external cd drive to install and run the game.  It wasn't Age of Empires, but the similarity between them is that they both use an internet connection to play.

Just throwing that out there.  May not be your issue at all, but thought I'd share.
