  • Any RC Boaters on here?

Hi Everyone, besides fish fanatics, I was wondering if there are any of ya'll are RC boaters as well. I have found myself getting really into RC boats and was looking for other's to run with on the lakes. If there are RC Boaters on here, would like to get together to run our boats for some fun and check out what ya'll running. Right now I have two project boats in the works. One of them I am hoping to get up to 75 mph.

Here's a few vids of what I am running..

No but there's a RC drag racer about crank back up after a long hiatus LOL

Nice looking boats Dilin. Always wanted one but never got around to it. What batteries are you using on them?

That dragster is very cool Sunny. Is it carbon fiber?
As for the batteries, I am running all LiPos in all the boats. I currently have 14 boats in my fleet right now, and they all use different spec batteries, but all are LiPo batteries. The Genesis in the first video uses a 4S 5000mAh 65C Lipo. It gives it about 4 minutes run time. On the 4S, it runs abut mid 40's mph (Haven't measured it yet). Its still a work in progress to get more speed out of it. Will need to upgrade the hardware to handle 6S batteries. The Infinity in the second video runs on 3S 3000mAh 60C batteries. That gives it a run time of about 3 minutes. I clocked it at 43.3mph via GPS. That's probably the limit of the Infinity hull since any faster and it becomes very unstable due to its small size. I currently have a Pursuit that I am working on. I just received it, but I have gutted it down to the bare hull. I am reinforcing the whole hull with carbon fiber. Need the CF to withstand the torque and speed from the motor I am planning to put in it. Going to try to run 8S in it and try for it to be my 75 mph boat (hopefully).

Yes, CF. I actually have 4 drag cars in various configurations all CF. Will be starting to race again next year, but I've just cleaned up everything in preparation.

I can't believe you're only getting mere minutes out of those big Lipos! (What brand are they?) I guess when you have a continuous high draw they deplete that quick.

What speed controllers are you using? I think I had decided on Castle Hydra Ice HV ESCs if I got any boats. Do you have those?

Yeah, the battery drains real quick. Boats are just killers on batteries since they draw so much power continuously. I have used several brands of Lipos, but they all seem to drain at the same rate, and non of them lasts. I average about 75 runs on a pack and then the pack is pretty much toast. They start to get real puffy on runs after that.
I think the problem is that the boats drain them too quick, over discharging them. I'm at a point where the lipos are just killing the wallet. On average, I am pulling a constant 90 to 120 amps continuous on a run.

As for ESC, Castle ESC are very nice, but expensive. I am using mostly Swordfish or SeaKing ESCs. I am currently running Seaking 180A V3 ESCs because they are IPX rated waterproof. I am also running a Swordfish Pro+ 220 Amp ESC. I like the Pro+ because it has data logging, I can connect it to my laptop after a run and get my temps, rpms, volts, watts, amps, throttle response etc and then tune the boat for the specific water conditions. I also like the Turnigy Marine and Aquastar ESC, since they are clones of the Swordfish and SeaKing at a much better price.

                  Here are some more pics.

Have you ever used Thunder Power, Hyperion and Neu Lipos? Gens Ace?

Hi Sunny, I have used TP and Neu, and they are good batteries, but over priced in my opinion. I have also used Nanotech (Overpriced crap), Venom (way way over priced crap), Turnigy (Decent), Turnigy Heavy Duty (Very good when they don't come DOA), Dinogy (good), Zippy (mediocre), Rhino (decent) and Revolectrix (My favorite).

Makes sense Dilin, given that you go through so many packs. I use Revolectrix/FMA Direct chargers exclusively. Have a few 4S chargers and a PL 8, which is a beast. I need to look into their batteries more. Have been using TP exclusively but they last years for me given I don't stick them in boats LOL

I have a couple of Leopard motors on the way to upgrade those stick boat motors. :)

That should help with run times too. How many KV do you run?

                              I have 2 4074 coming in at 2200, 1800 and a 4082 1600 kv

On my 3s boats, I like to run around between 2700 and 3000 kv.
On my 4S and 6S it depends, but usually its in the 1400 to 2000 kv depending on the hull and prop size and temps..
