  • WTB small puppy

My wife wants to get a pup for the kids, so they are looking for something that stays under 10lbs (yorkie is what she really wants). Please no yip-yap pups, you know what I mean the kind that barks at their own shadow. So if you know of anyone thats selling any please let me know
    Thanks

      Hello Cesar:

Please check with the Humane Society and breed rescue groups...please do not BUY a puppy from a puppy mill...there are many sweet dogs waiting for adoption and if you go around to the various shelters and rescues, I am sure you can find a nice dog for your children...get on line and check out the different breed rescues, too...

This is my little soap box...there are way too many unwanted animals out there...if you BUY one you are just perpetuating the puppy mills and unresponsible breeders...and a puppy that would have made a great companion and protector for your children will get put to sleep...

PLEASE, PLEASE...check the shelters first...   Heidi

Normally I wouldn't respond to this post, but special circumstances actually make have an opinion. As I am writing this my dog is at the vet being euthanized. The only thing making this easier is the fact that she has lived longer than %75 of her breed. I believe this was due to her good breeding. She was from a show line, but she herself was pet quality [she had a spot]. I think the best choice of a dog would be one from a quality line, because the longer a dog lives the easier it is when they die. I would not buy from a puppy mill nor adopt. Buy from a reputable breeder.

Dogs for adoption usually are puppy milled or mutts; both have health problems. By adopting milled puppies, you are encouraging the production of more milled puppies.

Golden retrievers and labs also make great dogs for kids...you can dress them up and walk over them and they won't snap...but they are "chewers" when they are young (3-8 months)...and need attention and training...and they are big dogs who will put their life on the line to save yours or to protect the kids...so please guys do some research before you actually get the dog, not after...it would set a bad example for the kids if you had to get rid of the dog...right now I cannot adopt another one...

And remember all "puppies" will pee and poop in your house a few times until they are old enough and/or properly trained...

I really like the big dogs myself,(had sheperds and dobies as a kid) but I feel that a lab or retriever would mow over my 2yr old, esp with that tail awaggin!! Thats why Iam looking for a dog that will stay small and that can grow up with my youngest
son. I really dont think a yorkie or anything that same size would be good around a toddler, Iam thinking schnauzer or beagle
either way it would have to be a pup ( I dont want a dog with an attitude problem taking a hunk out of my kids hand).

They are not small but my boxers are absolutely great with my daughter as well as all my nieces and nephews (all the kids range from 1.5-16years). They are really great dogs, just require lots of exercise.....

I have an Aussie Shepherd who is an awesome and unbelievably smart dog, but he is large and does shed and I mean shed a lot, but there's not a mean bone in his body.  I also have a Boston Terrier, by default, which might be a good choice for you.  They only get to about 25 pounds full grown, have short hair and really great personalities.  Mine is a real lap dog, which is fine except when he starts snoring

I had a red merle mini Australian Shepherd that was 35 lbs full grown, man I miss that dog. The shedding problem does bite big time, I had to vacuum everyday. My wife has childhood issues regarding Boston terriers, so probably not an option. Iam surprised that nobody has pups of any kind for sale right now.

Agreed. There are so many pups needing homes. Check the local shelters first. Give a pup a second chance at love.
Besides, the shelters will be flooded with pups that were given as Christmas gifts, but are unwanted now as the previous owners do not want to spend $$ on their vaccines and heartworm prevention, the pups soiled the carpet, destroyed an expsensive pair of shoes, and/or is digging holes in the yard. I know this from my line of work. Sad but true  :!:
