I am 3 years experience working for Yahoo Small Business and now am with Hostgator ( a local company).
Avoid Yahoo because they are downsizing and their service is terrible.
As for Hostgator , they are one of the top 5 hosting companies in the US. Their servers are Linux. Their servers are located in Dallas and they do not share theirs with other hosting companies. Beware of the cheaper services because they share to lower costs. This sharing will impact response times to your sites. You also risk constant reboots caused by shared resources which will cost you performance.

I've been using Startlogic for a couple of years and they suit my needs quite well.
