Sorry didnt mean to  reinvent the wheel..

I looked further for you and came upon this forum that discusses your issue. Its a couple years old, but has some solutions. Whether solutions still exist I am not sure, but it gives you some ideas.

No need to apologize - it was great of you to take the time to help!  If you look toward the bottom of that post you'll see my little piece of it (spot) - seems we both found the same thread  :)
I ran across forums too that mentioned solutions but I was hoping to get the darn printer running today or tomorrow so I could print forms and labels for the auction Sunday.  I should have tried hooking it up when I first got the computer a fwe months ago, then I'd be up and running already.  Never bothered since I print stuff out so rarely.  I may try and borrow a printer that'll connect or something and just order the darn cable.

While I was researching, I found a few cables that boast "Tired of only having to unplug your printer to use your scanner?  Use this cable to allow you to plug your printer into your USB port on your computer and free up your parallel port for other devices!" or something along those lines.

Would this work?  Instead of trying to find a single replacement cable to go from your printer to your computer, how about adding another cable/adapter?  

So it would go USB to parallel to parallel to mini-centronic.....

I called.  They didn't have it.  Aren't going to get it until *maybe* April.  

It's not ideally what I wanted, but it would provide the desired end result, and I'm fine with that.  I just want the darn printer to work with the computer.  Preferably I wouldn't want 2 cords, but hey, if that's more convenient, I can handle an extra coil of cord in that snake's nest of computer wires behind the desk....
