She has as little scabby right in the middle of her back from one of the other dogs scratching her....then she decided that if it itches she was gonna scratch it till it bled so a mohawk won't look too good.

Thanks for all the input guys...I think I will give the mobile groom service Roy recommended or at least give him a call before attempting anything myself.
I worked for The Pet Palace off I-45 and Dixie Farm Road for 3 year and their groomer, Felicia, is the best I've ever encountered. She is very patient, nice, and to top it off, does a fantastic job. I don't live in Houston anymore and have not been able to find another that does as good of a job. Their website is www.thepetpalace.net. If I hadn't moved I would still be working there today, they have the nicest owners and atmosphere. Another thing I have noticed is they don't charge as much as other places. She would charge me $32 for my dog and the last place I took her cost $46 and the place before that $50 and my dog didn't look as nice or smell as clean either time.
I will say that if you bathe the dog it will make the mats tighter. Also, if you use scissors cut perpendicular to the dog's skin when cutting mats or you can accidentally cut the dog's skin.
And I've seen Felicia do lion cuts on pomeranians, chows, and long-hair cats.
I used to have a lion cut done on my red Chow about once a year. I'd take her in for the initial cut, then I'd maintain it during the summer. Charles is so right about the cheap clippers. Not only do they get too hot but they dull very quickly. I finally spent about 200 on some Oster clippers. I had the poodle one done once for the heck of it - now that was pretty funny!
I'd suggest doing it that way tho, let them do the inital cut, and you just maintain it. I'd hang around and watch while they do it - not so much to see how it's done, but to see how cooperative the pooch is. I've seen some tiny little dogs get pretty darn vicious! I never had a problem with my Chow Mandy when I trimmed her, but one local shop didn't want to do her again (I suspect they weren't too gentle with her, and she was a very docile chow). Petsmart never reported any problems, and I often hung around and watched from a distance to see how they treated her, and how she acted.
