  • Dr. Michael E. DeBakey

It was with great sorrow I opened up the MSN headlines to find that the world had lost one of the greatest pioneers of medicine this past weekend.....
He is and always will be remembered as the "perfectionist" in his work.....
Alot of humans owe their lives to the technique that he perfected known as "coronary bypass"......
He will be sorely missed...and forever remembered with fond gratitude for his contributions to the medical field.....

    RIP ......Dr. MIchael DeBakey

Thanks to his accomplishments, my father has had two successful quadruple by-pass surgeries and a successful implant of a pacemaker/defribrilator (sp?).   I credit him with the long life my Granddaddy had 19years after his quintuple by-pass that kept his heart beating even after the rest of his body stopped.  Both of the strong men in my life had surgery at George Washington Hospital Center under hands trained by this Houston Icon.  De-Bakey was an amazing man, dedicated to making the heart the strong organ it is needed to be.  RIP kind heart.

Had the pleasure of meeting & spending an afternoon w/ this great man at the Houston Livestock Show years back as he was a strong supporter of Cutting Horses.     One of his surgical nurses was my friend and neighbor.    My friend, Priscilla, said he was a pleasure to work with.          What a hoot see this more human side of him--in his boots, tall tales & jokes and big smile.        His love of life shown thru.         A loss not easily replaced,   never to be forgotten.   Bless you, Doc.

I met him once.  I went to Debakey High School for Health Professions.  He came to sponsor some event we were having and I was playing the piano for the choir to sing.  He came up to me afterwards and told me he liked my playing.  We spoke for about 10 minutes and he was just a very genuine guy.  We need more like him.

I've seen him many a time at the hospital since I started working there back in 1988.  He was a man regarded with awe and respect.  It is great to see that even on this board, he has touched so many lives.

It was a hoot to see the man driving his little sports car.   :)

Here is information that was emailed to me by my work...

I went to the high school that was named after him. I saw in during my junoir or senior year in the elevator. Had a chance to shaked his hand. It was a wonderful experience just getting to know him. Such a great man.
