Ek, that's excatly what it is. I didnt' want to get off topic in finfan's post so I posted a new topic here.
Do you have pictures of when it bloomed? I had read an article about it's place or orgin but can't remember where I found the article. It was very intresting. According to the article they have a big party the night of the bloom and they celebrate. The next morning the flower starts to die and falls off. I didn't even know this cactus would make a flower. Last year was the first time we ever saw it. We had the cactus upstairs on the balcony and hardly ever went up there. When we evacuated for Rita, we forgot about it. It was on a table, we thought it was doomed. We have had it for over 10 years. When we returned home I went upstairs to check on it and there were shingles all around the bowl, and only one small piece about the size of a quater in the bowl and one piece that had sliced into the cactus. The cactus was still standing. It was amazing! There were also shingles that had actually cut through the wood on the fence and were still there when we returned. The shingles were about 2" deep on our balcony. What a mess it was to clean. Our balcony turned out to be a catch all. Here are my pictures that I took before, during and after the bloom.
