  • Armistice of 10/12/2008

I'm asking for a truce to all political discussion to after the election. What have started out as a debate/discuss is not going the way it should. I started last night with the truce (even though i am the hated one). I also ask that all threads related to politics be locked or deleted.

Now..if I wrong for asking for this...so be it. We all know who supporting who! Instigating and side comments have also added fuel to this  if you feel you need to have power then go out and vote for whomever you feel is best for the country. It's your right and only you can take that right away by not voting.

I think a truce is a great idea.

I dont understand why we should not be allowed to talk about politics on here. This is a forum board for people to talk. Now I will say some things said sound like border line personal attacks and I will agree we should refrain from that but not lock threads that talk about politics that is the whole purpose of America.

Hey, there has been smack talk going back and forth for MONTHS.  I know D and can honestly say he is not the type to get smacked and tuck tail and run.

Well, this has certainly taken a turn, not sure what direction, but it's taken a turn.

                      Re: Armistice of 10/12/2008

I have mixed feelings on this. Part of the reason I kept going on some of these threads was that people were telling me they were enjoying watching the discussion. I think we can talk about politics without being abusive, resorting to threats, or using foul language...at least I hope this is the case. In truth, I never expected it to degenerate to that level. The purpose of this section of the board is for people to be able to talk about non-fish related subjects. If some topics are going to be off limits...then why have this section? These discussions have brought to light topics and issues that the mainstream would just as well like to see remain dormant...and that surely must be a good thing. Instead of cutting off all discussion of the subject...why not just agree to be cordial, to not resort to name calling, to not resort to threats, and to not resort to foul language? These things are what make these discussions in any way unsavory. Surely we can examine the facts that are out there without resorting to such tactics. I see no reason to delete the previous threads. They are filled with facts and ideas that are quite useful to the average reader. Surely such censorship is not part of what we want in any regard, but especially as it relates to a topic that will shape our nation for years to come. I will make this concession. I won't say anything about the lack of grammar or proper usage unless it so distorts the meaning of what was trying to be said that it becomes incomprehensible and requires clarification. I certainly don't want the negativity to continue. But I must also point out that the negativity was not initially generated by me. In that spirit I will remove the "countdown" from my signature. In truth I was hoping it would also draw people to the HAS auction (like we need more...sheesh). People have different perspectives. This comes from a whole host of reasons...socio-economic, educational, cultural, family, intelligence level, and many others. The key is to debate the issues from your perspective without attacking someone else based on one of these background reasons for that person's perspective. Not that those background reasons aren't possibly at issue...but it can and should be done in a respectful way. An armistice or truce is used to cease hostilities when we are at war. We need not be at war over these issues. So I, for one, intend to continue to chime in, as is my right. I will, however, take greater pains to make sure that my opinions come across without malice and with the spirit intended.

I'll simply say that all the debate on all political and social issues drive me to research. Thus, I learn. I sometimes learn about people, facts and in many cases I learn that we are a very diverse group who are passionate about issues outside of our love of the aaquatic hobby. It is this passion and need to learn that brings most of us here.

Now that sad, I have been guilty in the past of making some attacks, i've also been attacked. I get stirred up and I sometimes do the stirring but all of that said I still consider the majority of everyone here to be good people and many of you to be friends in spite of our differences in opinions, experiences and feelings.

This is all to say that i personally learn a lot from all f you and for that I thank you no matter what you all decide is best moving forward.

'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'
