  • Oil drop

I have seen Obama's commercial about McCain and there was a comment about how McCain wants to help oil companies. And I know a lot of people think the oil companies are the devil. However, if the current trend continues we will see dramatically lower profits in the coming quarters from the major oil companies. The funny thing is we will see people stop talking about how evil the oil companies are since the prices are dropping but people will still believe that they are the devil and they will not see that the profits and losses that the oil companies make are not the doing of the devil but the culmination of an enterprise scratching out a hard earned dollar out of billions spent so we can drive the cars and heat/cool our lovely homes.

i spent most of the 80's and 90's doing oilfield work.other than about 3 months during the first desert storm thing, oil prices were between 11-18 a barrel.alot of the folks i worked for barely got by.nobody cared if we failed or not.now, they're making money and every one is mad.tough luck.

      Re: Oil drop

My father lost a good job during the 80s and there was no government bailout of big oil.  Interest rates for homes were 13% or more at that time and I was the oldest of seven kids.  Now the global economy demands more oil and we are paying the price of demand.  Houston runs on these big oil companies and we have one of the best economies  in the nation because of it.

I spent most of my career automating petro/chem plants.   Building systems to keep the plants from going boom in the night.
The operators and maintaince people that work in those plants earn their money.
But like all other big corporations, the board room is all about making money for the stock holders.
I just wish we could ballance our imports with exports.........

Oil Drop - Demand Drop... no brainer, still doubt very seriously if the big wigs will have to have a yard sale anytime soon.

                  Re: Oil drop

As a former [17yr] chem plant operator [Gulf / Chevron ] we were paid for when things went wrong.        It happened alot then & sometimes  it was not enough $ .      thanks, PhishPhreek for anything you & others  accomplished to make it safer.

NO, I do not agree w/ flucuation of fuel prices as they have been in recent times.  No one's letting me file a claim on possible damages everytime a storm wanders thru the Gulf.   That's some creative bookwork there !

IMO  --  Always thought newer development technology to process our sour crude would go along way to help the country, oil companies, EPA, consumers, etc.    We go to other scurces of oil as they have less regulations and sweet crude whose process has less unwanted end product.    It would take NEW processing plants BUT we would be processing our oil, safer for all and wean off some of  the foriegn demand.

IMO  --  the sun is still abundant and if long term alternative sources are not to be also be expended - put some of those funds in the direction of solar seriously.        Gang, do your research on what it takes to "make" some of these "alternative fuels" and it goes back once more to OIL  --   sounds like that can still be a problem !!!!

                    Re: Oil drop

Dont get me wrong I am all for alternative sources of fuel. I am closet environmentalist. I was born and raised in Austin so I have seen the hippie tree hugger demands and some of it has rubbed off. But I am for responsible and practical achievement of such. And what I see in the liberal world is that there is a knee jerk reaction to the evils of oil but no real thought to the consequences of the knee jerk reaction. One there is the cost problem that all Americans will have to bear which is tremendous. Two currently the process of creating the alternative fuels is not reducing pollution as some might think. The amount of oil based products needed to create the lovely ethanol that people proclaim is the savior is tremendous it uses almost as much pollution to create ethanol from corn as it saves in the use in our cars. The amount of pollution created in creating the hybrid electric cars is still considerable. The only problem is I also do not see enough by some conservatives to come up with a good solution to the problem. The government needs to stop giving out hand outs and use that money towards developing new sources.

There are alternate energy sources available right now.  switch your electrical provider to Green Mountain.

Green Mountain Energy® Electricity helps reduce your household's share of harmful CO2 emissions.

Below is the estimated environmental impact I have made since becoming a Green Mountain customer.
                        8367# CO2,  9298 miles not driven,  569 Trees planted

                          Re: Oil drop

I don't understand how the CO2 emission is bad for plants. In my tank plants grow much better when I increase the CO2 supply. Maybe I am stupid because I don't watch TV, yes this must be reason.

                            Re: Oil drop

CO2 isnt bad its just the amount of CO2 that is produced far outweighs the amount that can be filtered and turned into O2 by the plants around the world. Causing a harmful build up and some would argue global warming. I wont get into that discussion.
