  • My Golden Retreiver - R.I.P. MAJOR - 01/07/1997 - 10/25-2008

This morning I woke up and was about to feed my dog when I realized that he had not touched his food from last night. I went to check on him because he usually meets me at the back door so excited to see me. This morning, he was not there. When I went to look in his doghouse, he was there with the sickest puppy eyes that I have ever seen on him. I called for him and he would not come out. So I let him rest and came back about two hours later. He had came out of his house and was laying on my patio. When I usually set in my chair, he always comes and lays by my feet. Not today!

So, I decide I better call the vet and ask for a appointment to bring him in tomorrow and the receptionist starts asking me the usual question

    Name?
    Dog's name?
    Breed of Dog?
    Age of dog?

Well, when I told her that he was 11 years old, she told me that golden retrievers normally live from 10 to 13 years old. That nearly broke my heart. I never thought about him dieing. I never thought about him being that old. Up to today, he usually still acted like a puppy! I was just complaining to Virgina because he would not stay out of my pond. Now I am afraid that I am going to loose him. I have had him since he was 6 weeks old and he has been a big part of my twenty's and half of my 30's so now it hurts to know that anytime I could loose him.

He has been the best dog ever! He will let me cut his nails, give him a hair cut, even give him his shots when needed and not even a growl. He has always been so loyal!

I am sorry for sounding like a wuss but I just needed to write and share this with someone. I just keep praying that God let me have at least two more years with him. I don't have any children and he has been like my child. I don't want to loose my baby!

I know how you feel!  I had my maltese since he was six weeks old and I was thirteen.  All we can do is give them the best vet care and make sure they are healthy and up to date on everything.  But it sounds like he is sick, or ate something he wasn't suppose to.  Let us know what the vet says!

I know what it's like to have a dog that you love like a child.
My baby boy (Abner Rae) is like my son.
I pray that your dog is okay. It sounds like your pooch might have eaten something bad.

              Re: My Golden Retreiver

Thank you all for your support... As of now, he is in my livingroom sleeping. I figured that he did not need the heat from outdoors. I tried to take him to the vet but he would not budge. He weighs 30 pound lighter than me and when he anchored himself than I decided that I better not stress him out so I called the vet and she said that I was doing the right thing, aspecially with his age. I didn't want to break a bone, cause him more pain or stess. I have been giving him some Mylanta and he seems to be keeping it down. I also have been giving him 500mg of Amoicillian. I figured that in the past, they have always sent him home with antibiotics so it wouldn't hurt.

Earlier this morning, I took him outside and let him take care of his business. I was putting plants around my pond and he came and laid by me and everytime I would move, he followed. He seems to be doing ok but just not eating but I force feed him with chicken broth. He seems so still have a litlle strength and a lot of stubborness.

I think he will be ok just as long as I don't push him. I was so scared to fall alseep last night but I finally pushed my self to do it. He is an older dog but he also has a lot more mischievousness to get into.  :P

does sound as if he may have eaten something yuk.    don't feed him to heavy or it may give him an upset stomach for another reason.    so glad he is acting more of his own self.   Pm sent

He was... for that day and the doctor said due to his age... his body could not fight anymore. He said that we did all we could but as of last night, he started actually vomiting. It was not clear and it smelt bad. I knew then that something had to be done. This morning he started foaming att he mouth and the doctor said it was from dehydration So, i took him back to the vet and they said that they could try and fix the problem but he still would belucky to see another year due to age. I would have had to pay for xrays and leaving him with the vet but the vet even said that there would be no promise to have him back so I asked the vet what was the best thing to do and the vet said that with everything going on... if it was his dog... he would put him to rest. So, idid what was best. It kills me and it still brings me to tears but I did what I thought was best.
