Re: I can hear the crickets!

I know you have been back to Galveston since the storm, how does it look down there? Is it like a ghost town? Is Moody Gardens still there? I haven't really heard too much and I'm curious.

Re: I can hear the crickets!

I think it's interesting how the news covered the storm but not the recovery.
Things are different. I wouldn't say that it's a ghost town but it's nothing close to what it used to be like.
The beaches were always packed before now it's just a scattered bunch of cars.

Homes are still torn down and there are things all over the road. There are still pieces of the seawall torn up and
      things thrown all over.
We've towed boats and cars out from under the sand. This morning around 5, I was helping the guys finish up a frame and we
went to put a steel beam down and it kept hitting something, it just wouldn't sink.
It took us until 9 to figure out what it was...it was a boat, buried about 15 feet down.
I've found everything from boats to dead cows buried under the lots and homes that I've bought.
Moody gardens is still in tact luckily. But I'm sure it doesn't have much business.
      The tourism here has flopped.

Wow! 8O I just can't imagine it. I guess there is just no telling what you might find under the sand.

My neighbors have a friend who would go to other countrys to get animals for Moody Gardens and she said that most of the animals didn't make it through the storm.  :(

I was wondering about that. I didn't know if they were running generators or not. I hate to hear that. We went about about a month before Ike and I loved the aquarium. If I had to give up Elvis, this would be the first place I would call. They had one huge protein skimmer. I think I stood there for at least 30 minutes looking at it. Meanwhile my husband was saying: honey the fish are over here.

LMAO! I've seen the skimmer too...it's magical.
Yeah, all of Galveston stinks...alot of dead stuff.  8O

:P I was totally amazed by that skimmer. I was thinking: If I had a huge tank and I put that skimmer on it Elvis would be so happy. I would probally only have to do one water change a year!   I even took a picture of it. :P  Yes I got excited over a skimmer.    I admit it.

I went to New Orleans a year after Katrina. Having friends from school who family lived in New Orleans always gave me a free room for my time down there before the storm. Now one year after the storm....it was a ghost town in the lower 9th ward. Still is to this date. I hope Galveston don't take as long to be back to full strength.

Me too. I think that Katrina's devistation was much more extensive. Looking back, I wish I had done more to help.
Galveston is bad but it's mostly structrual damage. To an architectrual engineer...it's devesataing because we know what every chip and crack means...but to most people, it's just "messy".
I hope the tourism kicks back up...I would hate to see places like Moody Gardens and the sea turtle hatchery go under.  :?
