Sad. I used to have a pair of these critters in the early 90's When Anything Fishy was around.

Are water dogs related to these guys?

Truth is the cement that holds the bricks and stones of a sane and civilized society together. Remove the former and the latter will crumble.

Aren't water dogs the aquatic stage of a salamander?

this stays this way its whole life.

I've always thought they were neat critters...

Some folks use water dogs as big bass bait ...I personally do not like to use live bait, but hey, that's just the way it is...

The ones I used to have went extinct by eating the gravel in their tank! 8O
When I got them from Anything Fishy circa 1994, they were 5.99 each, when I saw them at Fish Ranch 2 a few years ago (pre marauder days) they were over 60.00 each! 8O

If they are in the Tiger salamander family, then yes.
