Indians kept dogs. Used them to pull travois, fed them scraps when there was food, ate them when there was none.
Early Mountain men enjoyed cats........... big ones.
And then there's the Donner expidetion.
'Dear Lord,' the minister began, with arms extended toward heaven and a rapturous look on his upturned face. 'Without you, we are but dust ...'
He would have continued but at that moment my very obedient daughter who was listening leaned over to me and asked quite audibly in her shrill little four-year old girl voice, 'Mom, what is butt dust?'

Yes, domestic rabbit (big fat & jucie) is much like chicken, wild rabbit is lean, tough & gamey.
But a tender young domestic rabbit stuffed with wild rice & mushrooms is right up there on the top of my list.
